Are there any big cities that are reasonably close to good skiing?

I bet the thread creator just quit skiing.

 Being from Calgary, I can say that if I wanted to spend a season or 12 somewhere crazy, I would pick Japan, mainly because I think Japan is a crazy place. because I havent been there. Just think, we play nintendo, they play Famicom (or at least used to back in the day lol)... crazy stuff.

Mammoth and Abasin are pretty rad places, but not as easily accessible from a 'big city' as the hills from Calgary. That isn't to say that it is hard anywhere in the states, or Europe, or whatever. But the quality and quantity from 45 minutes, to 4-5 hours away is staggering. I am not saying Calgary is a big city, but a million people is pretty big, it just isn't as urban as vancouver, or even Denver which in comparison is very like Calgary. the one up we have in this instance is quality and lack of crowds. Even on a busy busy day few of the resorts feel crowded, I can't say the same for when I have skied in Colorado, California, Tahoe, or even Montana.

 What is the deal with 'big city life'? if you are really looking for that, I would say Japan in the winter, and for ease of accesablity, go live in Queesntown in new zealand for the summers if you want to chase snow. Chile is another option if you have that in mind, but I don't think it is as easy to get around down there.

 Anyways, this wasn;t for arguments sake, and mainly my own bias screams here, but it makes sense to me. I guess you could always live in LA, or San Diego, and check out the park scenes at bear and mt high etc, I have a fun time with that every year. Close enough to tahoe, (sort of) and mamoth/June (kind of).

With no traffic (worst case scenario)

Breck/Keys/Abay/Copper: 1.5-2 hours (5 hrs)
Vail/Beaver: 2-2.5 hrs (8 hrs. Srsly, 8 hours. When it dumps and semis jacknife over both Vail Pass and right before the Eisenhower tunnel)

Denver is my birthplace and i love it to death but I'm in Seattle now, pretty much for the purpose of living in a bigger city but still having the mountains. Stevens, Baker and Crystal can be a hike when the weather gets iffy and then it's worth it because they're all incredible mountains. but for all the shit people talk on Summit/Alpy, it's right off an interstate with at least three lanes open and lots of restrictions on truckers. Even with bad traffic, it's about an hour.

Granted i had to get used to skiing in the rain and not seeing the sun but when you get consistent cycles and a stable backcountry... I can trade in the sun. i've always enjoyed the parks at stevens and summit too, granted they aren't a three ring circus like breck.

boston is like 2-4 from all the good new england mtns but if u want bigger then id say portland or Denver or vancouver.

Like its normally November 11th- May long weekend.
Whistler is November 21ish- End of May, and then glacier riding is June- end of July.

but yes, whistler is longer... however, it doesn't rain east of big white in the winter generally.

Population. I know we are one of the biggest citys but I didn't know the second biggest. What about Montreal? Really metropolitan population is what matters anyways though
