Getting Into Filming

Hello Ns, I am just trying to get into the world of filming for the next ski season. I am interested in buying a camera that shoots solid quality and is good skiing and other extreme activitys.

I am looking for something with a few manual features that I can work with and learn from but still with an auto feature. I have been trying to search the forums for advice that has already been given but everyone sort of has different opions and everyone is looking for something different in other threads.

My price range is $800 - $1500. So NS I am hoping that I can get some solid advice in regards to a camera. Thankyou!

I would say you have a few options with your price range.

1. HV30/refurbished HV30. Spend your extra money on wide angle lens, tripod, maybe an external mic.

2. HDSLR like a T2i or a 5/7d.

3. Used prosumer camera like a XHA1 or DVX100b.

i was in the same boat as you at the beginning of the season. i got a canon hf 200, pretty good camera, small enough to fit in my pocket and shoots decent qualitiy video, and has some manual controls.

but look into hdlsr that do videos, i regret not getting one

HV20/30/40 + gopro HD + Fluidhead tripod + hand thingamajig's for gopro

That will probably put you at about $1000

I have heard a lot about the hv 20 30 40 and I have seen some footage come out really well and some not as well.

Is this a solid camera?

all depends on the filmer. i could give you a $5000 camera and a pro filmer a hv30 and the hv30 will look better and vice versa.

you cant really go wrong with the hv 30-40 in terms of your price range... you could snag one on ebay for around 650 and then drop the extra cash on a dece lens or tripod. Like said above, all you really need to do is get to know your camera well and get a good grasp of a good editing program.

this past month after my camera broke ive been in the same boat and seriously coulnt pick out a camera.
eventually i decided the best for what i do would be the canon t2i. it shoots amazing hd video and is pretty customizable from a lens aspect.
plus it takes stills!

i've taken at least 200 pictures today and i got mine just for video. its fun stuff and you learn the basics fast.
