Cruising the internet, found this. Truly unconceivable what it would have been like living in the nearby area at the time during and right after the accident. Read the captions that go along with each photo. Almost made me physically ill looking and wondering what it was like.
Nuclear power also produces the most efficient amount of energy! One ton of Uranium produces more energy than is produced by several million tons of coal or several million barrels of oil. Out of the 104 nuclear power plants in the US, they produce 60 BILLION kilowatt hours/year of electricity.
Nuclear power is probably the most efficient fuel there is. Uranium can be found anywhere in the soil (although some areas have higher concentrations than others)
Haters also have to take into account that what happened at chernobyl is downright stupid. The soviet's "testing" they did involved them putting a shit ton of radioactive products together in one reactor. Those quantities found in one place at a single time are unheard of today. The NRC doesn't allow it, regulations don't allow it, nuclear engineers, technicians, and scientists won't go near it, and it's unnecessary to do. A small amount of fuel goes a long way, and there is no need to use more than what is needed at a single time.
It is important to remember that we were very close to a meltdown at 3 mile island. Technology has advanced, however the more nuclear plants we build the greater chance of failure there is. There will be another nuclear disaster, its just a matter of time. Also remember that spent nuclear fuel lasts a long time. There was a facility being built to store it, however its construction was recently canceled. So given the stigma it is going to be very hard to get anyone to agree to put a nuclear reactor in their back yard. Also you cant just collect uranium from any source, it has to be in high concentrations in a very limited number of places on earth.
That being said, you have to break some eggs to make an omelet. In my opinion there are countless advantages to nuclear energy and only a few disadvantages. There are also some new energies on the horizon that could solve all our problems with out the risk...
few thousand years, uranium deteriorates into multiple other radioactive elements, which can have half lives running from milliseconds to millions of years
well its constantly being "cooled" whenever the plant is in operation since the "cooling" is the boiling off the water which generates the power, if the water were never there, it would be like burning radioactive material, similar to that of a boiling pot except the water never runs out, there is a constant water supply
As much as I hate chemistry, nuclear energy fascinates me. My brother is an engineer who fixes, designs, and works on reactors; I could listen to him talk for hours.
Too bad that was a hoax and she didn't ride through on a motorcycle because you can't get past the checkpoints to go there on a motorcycle and you have to have a guide with you.
so, you aren't a fan of using available resources that are never going to run out, and take no efforts to harvest( other than needed equipment)? But you're cool with something that has disastrous effects from accidents?
nah just imagine stony crusing around chernobyl with your buddies.
NO COPS first of all, so ghost ride that shit for all i care while smoking a joint while doing coke off a prostitutes ass for all i care.
then you guys can get madd paranoid you all have cancer 3 hours in to the trip.
then your balls get huge because you had them near the microwave too long
and then your car breaks down in chernobyl and all you have is a video camera, and a guy who edits films in imovies, and then you decide now is the perfect time to start filming a scary movie.
i think abandoned towns are the shit they seem so damn cool, ive always wanted to go and explore a bunch as like a cross country road trip with some buds
