why don't you add tape dropouts instead...you aren't shooting film, are you?

no im not, i've never heard of a tape dropout before, where could i download some?

What everyone is trying to say, is that film burns are really lame and you shouldn't use them.

i understand that, and tape dropouts were mentioned. Being sort of new to editing, i was curious as to what they were.

Film burns were originally considered a flaw in film, then they were considered artsy by the whole "intentional imperfection" trip...people would hold the lens cap over the lens and let just a tiny bit of concentrated light hit the gate...

My sarcastic comment referred to tape dropouts, which are also a flaw in DV footage. Its when the fields become jumbled and "skip." Part of the image squares off or displays purple/green squares for a few frames. I guess this could be considered the "film burn of the DV era," but really its kind of stupid.

I know you're going through a film burn phase like every filmer does at one point, but let us save you some time and trouble. It's whack, cliche', and doesn't make any sense because your footage will obviously look digital unless you are a camera master at making DV look like 16mm. Somehow I feel if the latter were true, you wouldn't be asking this question in the first place.

filmburns are sick if you use them right but if its shit then it makes the edit shit

filmburns are not good transitions. it makes no sence because you are shooting digital requardless. find ways to blend the end/beginning of clips and thats when it looks real good
