Alright, to be honest, I WANTED to be disappointed. I WANTED to believe that all this bullshit about Canada's edit not deserving the win compared to NS/Norway/America. But after watching that edit, I just *couldn't* disagree with the judges.
First, but not most importantly, they won on their winning of the category for "overall impression." Giving overall impression to Canada is really beyond dispute -- no other edit was as fun, beautifully shot, well-edited, and technical (maybe only on jumps, but still) as Canada's. Since they won based (pretty much) only on overall impression, they're the legit winners in my book.
Secondly, it's hard to argue that any other edit really topped this one in filming or editing. Personally I didn't really like the song choices, but it gave a very unique vibe to the edit, unlike America's. With Mike Clarke behind the scenes, what else can you expect, but still... very impressive.
As for the skiing -- since this is a SKI film competition after all -- their style was nearly flawless. Teej's signature bow and arrows on those motionless spins on the JOSS kicker and step up were orgasmic. There was lots of spin variation, and I was surprised to see how creative the grabs got. My only two major knocks against their skiing (which was certainly the weakest part of their edit) was that they didn't show many doubles (I know they're controversial, but at least throw a few more than the 3-or-so they did) and they had 2 shots of urban in the entire movie. Jon stressed that urban would be a bigger part of the contest this year, but he really isn't backing that up by giving the win to Canada, who had nearly NO urban whatsoever. Where is the motivation for other teams to use urban in future years if there's no precedent it will count for anything?
But then again, it is URBAN... and think about who they have on their team... since when does either TJ or Chug slay urban on a regular basis? Yeah, not that often...
Also, the intro was trippy as shitttttt... could anyone else really follow that the first time they watched it? Too many fast cuts, in my opinion.
Just my thoughts, but I'm glad to finally have all the edits out so we can make our own opinions... I know mine was very NS-esque in that I assumed Twall got robbed, or that team NS deserved the win and that Canada did not. After seeing the edits finally, I think I'm forced to side with Jon's decision.
Great comp, and all the entries were ill. Stoked for next year!
