Does anybody know how far the eye can see...?

if you were standing ontop of a mountain range, say 10,000 feet and you looked out over the plains, how far can you see? could you see another mountain range 500 miles away, 1000 miles away?

I live in Montana and on a clear day from our ski hill you can see the grass range mountains that boarder Canada about 300 miles away. just curious

i think you can see as far as the horizon will let you see.

as far as if you had a flat surface. i dont know

Haha i work for KGB, all we do is google the shit anyways, and chances are if i typed this in on google, i would just get newschooler talk, and use the info i find from ns in the text back to the person, and after doing all of that i will get 10 cents from KGB, damn i need a real job

If I ever got that question while working, I would say:  Chad's Gap is blown up, you cannot get to it.  Try a different gap.  KGB 24/7.

Then my source I would type in www.newschoolers.com

And I would click charge.

I would be  paid 10 cents, and you, the asker, would be charged 99 cents.





And that is how KGB works

Yea, anyone with internet access (high speed).  You have to take a test online that takes like 5-10 minutes to see if you qualify, which is really easy.  Then if you qualify, they ask you where you live and your age.  You have to be 18 or older and live in certain countries, United States, (Canada I think is good), Ireland/UK, and Philippines.  Then you have to go through training online for at least 5 hours.  Then you can start making 10 cents an answer on KGB, which, on a good day with easy questions, is about 4-5 dollars an hour.

My advice, don't do it, unless there are absolutely no jobs where you live.

aparently theres a rather easy way to calculate this, you do :
sqrt(altitude) * 1.225 = range of vision

you can see as far as light travels. If clouds block the light, you won't see further than the clouds. If everything is clear, you will see stars from lightyears away. The question would be how far light can travel?  You can then ask yourself how far you can see details, colours, clear shapes etc. I have no answer to that

well you can see the sun, the stars and other planets just by looking up and those are really fucking far away so you can see an object until it becomes to small due to distance

the furthest visible star is a few million light years away. it all depends on the brightness of the object tho.  If it was bright enough you could see something on the other end of the universe.

Your eye doesn't see out to a distance, it sees the light coming in. Light can travel forever, light from stars are light years away yet you can still see them. The reason you can't see very far is because the light gets blocked by the curvature, haze, clouds, whatever.

looking out over the ocean on a clear day/flat water you can see 17 miles, before the curvature of the earth takes over.  This came from a ex navy guy,  so it should be legit.

The sun is also really fucking big.

It depends on how big an object is, like a mountain range. You couldn't see a penny from 300miles away since it is so small but you could see something that is really fucking big.

you can see as far as there is light provided.  ex.  look up in the sky, you can see light from stars potentially light years away, but for newer stars being formed where the light still has to travel to us to see, we are "blind". 

the horizon thing is also true.

from wiki answers: The is no set limit. It all depends on the amount of light being emitted by the observed object. Looking out in space on a clear new-moon-night the nake eye can see stars that are LIGHT YEARS away. However, on relatively flat ground here on Earth, the nake eye can see for about 8-10 miles until the curvature of the planet makes the land "disappear" from view.
