Math Major in need of help....skiing related.

Hey NS, while everyone else is waiting for the JOSS edits to appear i was hoping to get some help on my final project for my MA 342 class. Long story short i set out to find three things. I am having trouble with the third thing, but it is rather minor. I was wondering if anyone could give me a rough estimate of an angle of a jump that will allow for a 30 foot step up. I only need a rough angle, and i can do the rest.

The three things i am modeling are: 1. the perfect speed to hit the sweet spot of a 60 foot gap jump off of a 3 meter high jump with an angle of 35 degrees.
2. The speed traveling and angle of a jump to hit a 45 foot gap jump with a 25 foot tree in the middle and drag my hand on the tree.
3. As stated above.
I made this sweet m.file in matlab that allows me to use all of the equations of mass, acceleration, drag, and position.
Sorry if this is confusing i am in a hurry to get it done. Once again thanks for any help.

Sounds interesting, I've always wanted to see a realistic model of a jump. Even cooler if you can alter the results depending on variables such as wind speed and direction.

I wish I could help you dude, maybe next year haha. High school math and physics doesn't quite cover this kind of thing.

If you actually got good at calculating this kind of thing, that would be sick. Could get you a job at a very nice ski resort. But with a math major, you probably don't want that. Either way though, sick project. Hope it works for you.

well are we talking 30 ft table with a 5 foot step up? wouldn't you need specs off the jump to landing because of the height difference?

Yes you would which i can calculate by putting in different velocities and angles.  What i am trying to ask is just the usual angle of any step up jump.  The actual size of the jump will probably be like 8 feet tall.  The skier will then be landing at something 22 feet taller from where they took off if that makes sense.

So your holding the angle constant?  Its probably pretty steep, like 60 deg?  I was actually thinking about doing that exact thing, it would be a really handy tool to have for jump building.

Are you just talking about a flat kicker, or a transition quarter pipe type jump?
If it's a kicker I can solve it if you give the length of the base or hypotenuse by using basic trig.
