I'm Catholic, and I am overly sick of all this shit. just because some crazy mother fuckers are touchin little boys and just happen to be catholic, it makes every catholic a bad person (according to stupid peices of shit). I wanna slap these guys, and now one of the victim lives near me...what the fuck...
Does the priesthood breed pedophilia or are pedophiles attracted by the fact that there really aren't/weren't screening processes for priests (especially 40-50 years ago when most of these cases were happening and
are just surfacing now)?
I think at least a some are/were individuals who were already pedophiles and used the priesthood as a means to gain a position of trust where they would be working with children.
Not necessarily trying to defend the Church's covering up of things and definitely not trying to defend those abusers, I just feel it's important to consider the above before writing off the priesthood as subversive and before generalizing about all priests.
that is logical, but it is very hard to become a legit priest. it pretty much takes up your whole life whether you rape little boys or not.
That said...
this whole "catholic priests rape kids" thing... well I'm no expert, but i feel like its blown out of proportion. (just like every time someone important/powerful/famous makes a mistake.)
I'm catholic, and even though i'm not very serious about it, i still believe in God and Jesus and basic Catholic teachings and i don't like it when people judge Catholics by some mistakes by priests.
I am Catholic.
And I agree that it reflects poorly on the name of the Church and the Catholic community around the world.
My diocese recently settled a sexual abuse case for $43 million. It was one of the largest priest sex abuse cases (in $) during its time. $10 million of those funds were raised by church donations. But I like in a relatively small town. This was big city news. Understandably, the local newspaper ran with it. The Spokesman-Review has always had a very conservative editorial feel, given it's ownership by the Cowles Family, making it one of the last family-owned newspapers in the US. So in short, they did and still do slam the Catholic Church, its advocates, members of its community, everyone. Past presidents who have visited Spokane have called it "among the most corrupt locally-owned media companies in the country." With the Spokesman-Review influencing public opinion, it was clear that their rightist political agenda was served.
I'm not trying to blame anything on the S-R, but they certainly made it a much larger case than it had to be. I'm sure that without the S-R, the settlement probably would have been half as much as it was.
So, I was at a friends place and fell asleep and his 10 year old sister decided to lay down next to me to sleep cause she considers me an uncle should I get locked up?
i agree that everyone who rapes kids and shit should get locked up. But its that people generalize about Catholics from this, and were not rapists for the most part.
The Vatican is it's own entity/country separate from Rome and Italy. Like the Roman police can go inside the walls and patrol but the Swiss Guard is responsible for anything pertaining to the Papacy.
haha I was waiting for you to call him out, however I still stand behind me calling out Paul.D on the first page.
""Quoting Paul.D. from Apr 15 2010 4:13:47:
How a couple of you judge the catholic faith based on a couple sex scandals completely fathoms me."" Fathom is a noun, he needed a transitive verb.
You can not be "fathomed" you can only fathom. I believe the word Paully was looking for was "baffles".
Any way that was a pointless english lesson and I hate when kids pull that shit. But I thought fathoms me was funny.
Back to the topic:
I don’t think anyone is trying to tell anyone what to believe. I am just trying to highlight how stupid your religion is. All I am trying to say that if you are Catholic and over the age of 12 you are either 1) Trying not to disappoint your parents. 2) Into having sex with little boys 3) Borderline retarded 4) In the boondocks saints. I think that goes for any religion really. Its so fucking obvious I just can’t see that on this one issue people abandon reason. It does not take an anthropologist to see that if you are raised Catholic, you will probably pick that religion. For fucks sake 1-3 to 1-4 (depending on how you break them down) of the ten commandment are about not worshiping other gods. Do you people see how stupid this is, a Supreme Being gives you 10 rules to live by and out of that list 3 are legit, 3 are about how awesome the Supreme Being is and 4 are about your neighbor’s wife? Grow the fuck up.
Oh and nooo don’t talk about my religion man that’s sacred to me. Fuck you, all religious people do is shit on others religions. If I had to pick a religion I would go with the native Americans, they worshiped animals like beavers, who doesn’t love a nice beaver? Thank "god" we came to our senses and worship a carpenter that live 2000 years ago.
In conclusion: I know the bible is bull shit, you know (even if you won’t admit it) that the bible (or parts of it IE stoning insorbornidant children to death) is bull shit. Why can't we just throw the fucking pile of garbage away and get on with advancing humanity?
btw, every catholic that calls himself one is only taking the good stuff and leaves the bad behind. if a catholic was to discover something against AIDS, wouldnt you be proud?
so lets say (crazy suggestion), that priests almost systematically abused children of all age and the church had full knowledge and tries to cover shit up, wouldnt you be ashamed?
this is a general thing: if i actively say that i belong to a group (fan of a sports team, religion, etc) i have to take the good AND the bad that come with it.
if catholics really believe that its wrong and terrible, they would call for the pope to step down. until that happens, i'm making the safe assumption that catholics support this disgusting behavior and they really don't believe in what is preached.
I'm catholic but not like "overly" praise jesus he died for our sins type. I'll probably break a lot of commandments because theres no way I'm going to participate in abstinence.
I think that the molestation gives the church a bad name but whatever.
Shows how educated you are, the pope is chosen by GOD dood. You can’t just change the pope, and even if you could there is a whole series of events that have to happen; black smoke, white smoke, meetings, special water, etc. The logistics are staggering. Just try to think of how hard it would be to find another guy, with this much religious pedigree, who was in the Hitler youth. And what would Catholics do without a celibate guy telling them how to live their sex lives, or make vast overreaching assumptions about scientific research. For god sakes man who would live in one of the most luxurious palaces in the world, guarded by the finest neutral Swiss guard? And don't forget the hat, who would wear the fucking hat?
this might be correct, but look up when the celibacy was actually made mandatory. sry dude, but that was somewhere around 1200 or so.
like all of christian beliefs, it is founded on some random dudes decision. just one word: lets say jesus lived and said exactly what is consensus in all books, he would cry because this has nothing to do with him. just an example, this "jesus died for our sins"-bullshit was "made up" by paulus. some guy who never met jesus, ok?
the whole church has as much to with jesus (or what we think to know of him) as hitler had with human rights.
I completely agree with you. But the S-R has a history of influencing public opinion with their conservative agenda. You'd have to live here to fully understand. It's a complicated issue that encompasses much more than the issues with the Catholic Diocese of Spokane.
i'm catholic. the best thing the catholic church can do right now is publicly apologize and acknowledge it. they are being idiots. things like this make me wonder why i am catholic.
