I would love to see USA or Italy take it, gotta rep the home country and heritage.  Really though, Spain has a great chance.  They have so much talent on their team. Can't wait for this though.  So stoked, its gonna be a great tournament.

If you're talking about his play at FCKoln, well they are in Bundesliga 1 this year, yea they aren't the best team, but he's playing against great teams, like FCBM and Hannover 96.....and don't even say FCBM isn't a good opponent , because they just upset Manchester United in agg. play. Also, Poldoski has 37 international goals and he's 24 years old. International play is what he lives for, club is secondary, money, believe it or not, is not everything in his mind. He could become a sell out and go to Barcelona or MU or even Manchester City, especially with them just buying every player, but he would rather stay in his home country and focus on international play

Bayern isn't bad, but right now they are the only ones who are playing on a major european scale from Germany right now. The bundesliga isn't a terrible league, but i'm just saying that he could be doing a lot more for himself.

I'll give you that, but in all honesty, Podolski is already one of the all time best German scorers in history, and he's only what 24?  And its not like Germany is a shitty country in soccer, they have 3 world cup titles, behind Brazil with 5 and Italy with 4.

I just read a bad story about South Africa in Time Magazine. fuck that place sounds gnarly..Im not gonna be going there, hopefully the games happen and nothing messed up happens.
Apparently South Africa has like the highest amount of Aids cases in the world. Not sure if its true or not, never been there but sounds odd. Hopefully they clean it up...

It has a high rate of AIDS because of the migrant workers that moved in from other parts of Africa (saw a documentary of this in Sociology Class a few weeks ago).  Even though there is a lot of AIDS, South Africa is the best economy in Africa, and Johannesburg, where a lot of the games are being held, is the 47th best city of commerce in the World, the only City in Africa to be in the top 50.  I think its great the World Cup is being held in Africa, hopefully it will bring more attention to Africa, and maybe even help stimulate some parts, like Johannesburg into major economies in the World.  As far as soccer goes, when World Cup is there, there will be so many Europeans and for that matter all countries in the world there, so if you are there, and you hook up with a girl, chances are she won't have AIDS if that is what you are worried about......

you have a point, but i wouldnt say that he is "focusing on international play". imo, he is lucky that he can still play. of course he plays well there, but kießling and kuranyi just deserve it more.

and i think he went back to köln and thought that he could still score 15+ goals, but this didnt work out and now he has pretty much no possibility to get to a top 10 side and i am pretty sure he doesnt want that in the first place. so the other guy is right, he is destroying his career. i guess he has a nice life and everything, but from a sportive perspective, he is not ambitious enough.

and btw, hannover 96??? are you serious?

Haha yeah I've heard of him, I wear his shoes.  I still think Rooney is much better right now if he weren't injured.  I would put Messi at number 3 because even though I strongly dislike Drogba, I believe he is the second best player playing.

i feel you're strongly overrating EPL players. I hate drogba like none other, and although he is good, I wouldn't put him at 3. Messi, rooney, ronaldo are top 3 I think. And ronaldo isn't even playing at his best.

And actually according to the current castrol ratings, its messi ronaldo rooney. And those are the definitive rankings in my opinion. They factor in damn near everything.

you sir are entirely wrong. To understand Messi I suggest you watch the arsenal barca game at the nou camp (messi scored 4 and was unbelieveable). Still unconvinced check out footage from the last two years.

It is highly likely that he will be considered one of the 5 best players ever to play the game.

what about ibrahimovic? yea he's not in world cup, but he's in most peoples top 5, and a good deal of people's top 3.  my suitemmates family is all from port glasgow scotland, and they think ibrahimovic is two to messi

They arent even strikers...

Rooney's more of a centre forward than anything which, is a little more geared towards playing a wider area... and Messi is an attacking midfielder.

I do believe they can defend, but why would they really need to, they are there to put the ball in the net and win games and they do just that.  Both are phenomenal players.  And Messi is not a striker, he is a midfielder and you cannot really call Rooney a "striker".

I honestly believe the USA has a legit chance at it...it is pretty much the best team they have had....one question though...

England will be really strong as well.

I think rooney actually took us (England) to the quarter finals of Euro 2004 and was the second top scorer behind Milan Baros, so before you start making statements like that do your research !

people need to stop listing the five or six best teams in the world and saying that one of them is gonna win. only seven countries have ever won the world cup and the same seven or eight teams dominate the tournament every time.

i think that brazil is going to win. they played damn well in the confederations cup and i bet theyre gonna come into the WC with some momentum. If there is gonna be an underdog team to win it i think that it would be the US, they have a surprisingly good squad

hey idiot, its hard to root for the US (or other non dominant teams) every world cup when everyone knows that have very little shot at winning. its only natural to pick a foreign country to root for that actually has a decent shot at the cup

solid post that at least resembled football knowledge. but seriously? confed cup-momentum? i cant think of anything that costs that much to host and still means nothing to everybody involved.

furthermore, "underdogs" have a problem in WCs because there is one game more than in an EC for example. so something like greece (US in this case) is highly unlikely to happen.

I partially agree with this statement. By no means am I saying the US will be on Argentina, Italy, Brazil, etc. skill level soon, but I don't think it's impossible to think they could win it someday.

When Donovan and Dempsey were growing up, there were very few kids playing soccer. Now, soccer is arguably one of the most popular youth sports in America. Guys like Jozy and Stu Holden are going up through the ranks and are getting the chance to play overseas, which doesn't help the MLS at all but every 4 years it could give the US a shot.

I don't think it is preposterous to think that the US will be ranked in the top 10 in the near future.

very few countries have a chance at winning it, yet their fans do just fine supporting them anyways. I don't mind people enjoying the world cup and supporting teams. It's just fairweather fans who love to be winners despite knowing nothing about the team they suddenly support. I've been watching this sport all my life, always supporting the same teams whether they are doing well or not. And every 4 years some dumbass who picked a team that was already in the final tries to convince me he's a diehard fan. Then 3 months later they've all forgotten.

not at all impossible, the US is getting better. But like every country, they go through phases. Right now they are approaching their peak, and then I think they will do poorly in 1 or 2 world cups after this while rebuilding the squad, and then they will be good again, possibly better than they are now. It happens to every team.

I would love to see the US go far, but i don't think they'll be a huge contender. germany's team looks great this year. it'll definitely be an interesting world cup this summer.
