Carl Sagan is a pretty smart dude.

Without all out "accomplishments" we wouldn't be able to appreciate just how insignificant they really are. The more we learn, the less we matter. Pretty interesting paradox.

Meh, I think it all boils down to interpretation of religion. Imagine if we had a religion that actually looked down on killing, stealing, harming, etc. Well we do, however people don't necessarily interpret books to look for the morally right actions, they read what they want to read to justify the actions they really want to take. That is just one of the major problems. What I love about some religions is they provide a moral fundamental basis for people living a good life. It's too bad our systemic approach to life in most countries condemns that from happening.

Thoughts on space really correlate with how miniscule our actions and possibly lives are. If we only have such a minimal amount of time, why are so many lives lived purely in poverty, hate, envy, etc? To me it makes no sense and that is definitely my humanitarian side in the scope of existence.

Another trippy thought I had once is that what happens when humans are extinct? Scientists say that there are only two animals who have the potential of spreading the story of humans throughout their own existence. Dolphins and monkeys. Imagine dolphins or monkeys dominating the animal kingdom and earth to such an extent that they in turn develop intelligence like humans probably did. Domesticating other animals and getting the proper amino acid combinations to develop serious brain activity through reduction of food collecting time. Makes you think...in 5 billion years of earth could there have been someone before us that we passed down through our hierarchy of ancestors? Someone who fed us knowledge like we held monkeys or swam with the dolphins? Obviously there would be no written knowledge, but ancient history is mostly stories. Perhaps their stories could evolve into what we in turn interpret as religion today? Just a thought...

at first I thought that doesn't actually look so small, but once it started zooming out, it really hit me.
I wasn't sold on the clips they used in the video though, they could have found better ones.

I was thinking about that last night. There's no reason to get angry over someone calling you an asshole, or your car getting towed. There's no reason to get worried if you fail a test, because its all so inconsequential. Nothing really matters.

It got me thinking about what I should do with my life, and what I should strive for. Is it really so great to be an entrepreneur, a doctor, a lawyer, or a business man, when none of them have any lasting effect. Even the damage we are doing to the earth right now is irrelevant in the history of the universe. We could kill every last thing on this planet with our garbage and in a million years, if the earth is still here, new organisms will pop up. When that happens it won't even matter that I found a cure for cancer after years of research and saved countless lives, because they're all dead anyway. What's the point in getting all worked up because I got 24 out of 25 kills for a nuke in COD.

If you are interested about more astronomy stuff, this guy makes some great videos that explain things in a pretty simple way. I've always been fascinated by our universe. It's really unbelievable.

Another trippy thought that i had is that as a human race we are completely ignorant to think that we are other beings out there in this vast universe. I forget who posted it, but that video posted of the hubble telescope said that it detected nearly 10 billion galaxies. Now tell me how you beleive that infact we are the only beings living in this universe, let alone galaxy.

Aswell, Im only 16 so i dont know too much, but does anyone know if scientists know how old other planets in out galaxy are? Never really thought about that and could probobly explain somemore.

I think you're missing the point. I don't believe that Carl said these things to make all people feel insignificant and that they aren't worthy of existence. His main philosophy is that we should get over our petty differences of race, national origin, class, etc. He is trying to say that greed and an insatiable thirst for power are such naive and unfortunate emotions because of our short lived time on earth. Our history won't always be here, and that I can agree to. Since humans are such a miniscule portion of what time has existed, I wouldn't doubt it if we would soon be forgotten and our existence is wiped from this earth.

However, I don't, and I don't think he does either, believe that we shouldn't encourage pursuit of our happiness. Via whatever economic system we deem viable, we still have to realize we are all human. Whatever regimes we topple, whoever we kill, whatever we steal, will all have been for such an insignificant purpose. For all the Hitlers, Ghengis Khans, Saddam Huesseins, etc, their actions hurt the very purpose what I believe is our existence. That is, much like you said, to enjoy our relatively short time on this planet while correspondingly helping others enjoy theirs. Because in the long run, a Jew and a Muslim both live and die. When they live their whole lives hating, nobody really lived.

think of thee universe, then a galaxy relative to it, then a solar system relative to it, then earth, then think of how small a continent is, then countries, then states or provinces, then cities, then groups of people, then individuals, then organs within that individual, then the thousands up on thousands of cells that compose these organ's, then the 100's of organnelles within 1 cell. think of how small the smallest organelle of the smallest cell is relative to the universe. it's weird to think of it, for me at least

I've thought of that a few times. Thinking kind of that the entire thought of universe isn't really the largest thing on in astronomical scale. Whose to say that beyond this universe isnt a whole new sort of life we can't even fathem.

I mean, when it comes down to it. You don't really have to decide. Thats the wonderful thing about life. We can enjoy so many things without understanding them! I bet most people dont understand the physics behind a ski jump and yet we love it!

Life in general should be the same. Do what makes you happy, and what you think is right. Thats all that matters. If thinking about this stuff is one of those things, I recommend going into philosophy.

I finally decided it wasn't worth ruining my life over, went skiing, had a great day, made my decision. Just because you decide to waste your life pondering a problem you can never solve doesn't mean you can look down on people who don't.
