How much do you tip?

one time we were smoking up the pizza dude and i asked him what the average tip was, and the answer was really brutal, he said "most" people just rounded up to the next dollar. so im curious, how much do you tip?

I live in New Zealand & I never, ever tip and never will unless staff do a truly exceptional job. It's just the normal thing in NZ not to tip. Having visited the USA several times it just seems so fucking strange (no offense) how it is assumed that one must tip. +K to the guy who posted the Reservoir Dogs scene... if they are on minimum wage in a stable job, why tip?

Because waiters and waitresses in America earn their money through their tips. Their pay scale is super low and their paycheck amounts to nothing. They depend on tips. I hate serving foreigners for this reason. They don't realize what cheapies they are.

around here the highschool-college crowd doesnt always get the most attention at restaurants because they assume we wolnt tip. i always try to tip between 20-25 percent but when i get neglected for older customers and have a super hard time just getting a refill ill just leave the leftover pennies on the table.


whats your opinion on tipping for a haircut? if i like what i see i usually throw in a few bucks, but if im not liking how it looks ill pay for the cut and leave no tip.

Hahaha, you're just continuing the bad rep you realize? A good tip stands out just as much as a bad tip. Remember who makes and serves your food. If you left pennies on the table, I wouldn't return to that restaurant haha. I personally would never fuck with someone's food or drink, but that's not to say the person you pissed off wouldn't either.

yeah like i said it's a weird system so i see where foreigners are coming from but the fact is waitresses make all their money from tips really. and tipping badly is a great way to get your food spit in..

sounds like the movie Waiting, hilarious movie, but just remember one thing, don't mess with the people who make your food

i normally tip anywhere from 15-20%, depending on the ammount of change, like i won't go out of my way to leave a $1.50 tip, i'll just round it to $2 and be on my way, because like said before, most of the servers' money is made through tips, and they make your food, so why not be generous?

counter tipping is a conundrum for me. I like to save all my change in glass jars, so I rarely give my spare change away. I hope to one day acquire enough change to buy something sick, maybe a sweet jacket, pair of leather boots, or a backpack. Or to finance a pub crawl in the UK haha.

true story, i have one of those culligan watter cooler bottles that i throw all my change in. theres about 3 inches of change in there. at last count totally roughly 200 bucks.

it ads up so fast if you just stash it away every time you break a dollar.

I was a pizza boy for 2 years and people were always stiffing me. Once or twice a week I'd get a $250+ order and get a $5 tip, I wanted to kill those people.

Depending on the service I tip differently.

Food delivery- 15%
Haircut-$3
Restaruant-18% bad service, 20% good service, and 24% great service
Bar-Usually a dollar a drink or two for $7+ drink.

Depends on the state.

In California you make minimum wage regardless or your tips. So every server here is making $8 an hour at least. Average 1 $5 tip an hour and you are making above average doing a job that takes little to no education. Probably why so many people start as servers and stay servers for life.

My old roommate would complain when she would only make $100 in a night. Servers have some sort of mentality that they are owed money.

Yes, taxes are taken out of their check, but they are taken out of mine as well. That and so many servers get away with out having all of their tips taxed.

I've grown to just consider the tip as part of the cost, cause if I don't, I'll get bad service the next time I return.

In other states where they dont make a wage, only tips... well too bad, you picked a profession based on tips.

i do this too. i've gone to cash in my change 3 times now in the last 3 years, each time equaling 150$+

heres what i do if i have a REALLY bad waiter/service. give them a decent tip, a couple bucks in change most of the time, put it in a glass full of water

take a piece of paper or a napkin, put it on top of the glass, then flip it so it's upside down

put the upside down glass with paper on the table carefully, then pull the paper out really fast.

now they screwed.

yeah man i feel you.. i was a pizza guy for a while. and tips for delvery guys is based off two things.. 1 did you bring the entire order 2 how fast did you get it there

that shit pisssed me off. i mean min wage was good. and i got 1.75 compisation for each delevery..but gas is spendy. and car maintice comes into play...

i dunno getting stiffed or having someone toss you a penny and say "keep the change" is pretty degrading"

i tip 20% sometimes more if they are funny and have good service.but at cash regesters..  change.

but if you have never had a job you got tips you would be less likely to give them.

in oregon every one has the same min wage. where in other states the wage for a waiter or host. is less beacue they include the fact that you recive tips..

and that resivor dogs shit is fuckin terrible.. great movie, great line.. but if you live by that your a peice of shit, sorry . its just my two cents!

i deliver pizza's...and not getting tipped just sucks. specially since you're driving their food to them.

my meals typically arent over 5 bucks (half priced apps at applebees), so i usually leave like 2 bucks. if its more i adjust..

I hate how at restuarants its like 20% is expected.  Tips are suppose to be in order to insure good service.  If a waiter/waitress is bad its hard to drop down to 10% or even 15%, especially at places that pool tips.  But even if they're good, its not like I can bump up to 25%...thats sooo much. 

Or places where tips are required, like 18% for 6 or more.  Like give me a break, tips are suppose to be for good service.  And younger adults defintily get worse service at a lot of places.

At a bar I always tip a solid amount if I'm there often because you just get good service and they'll hook you up with drinks.

Barber also gets 3-4 bucks always cause I know he pays more attention and time to my haircut becasue of it.

Never do tip jars unless its change and I don't have my car.

Pizza man? - four bucks or so

I once saw a guy at a bar paying for two drinks (maximum of 20€ total in that particular bar). He payed with an 100€ bill and asked for 10€ back. That's a pretty good tip in my opinion, especially in Finland where people don't  really give tips.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to imply you were cheap, my bad. I more or less meant that when you get a table and they're not from here, you know its going to be a less than average tip.

delivery: 50 ($5 for delivering a $10 pizza isn't as much as 50% sounds like)
bars: just $1 per drink bc I think thats a fucking easy job

I think the concept of automatic tipping is ridiculous.  If restaurants think that the waiters/waitresses deserve more pay, how about putting a no tip policy in place, jack the price up 15%, and give the extra to the waiters.

Not to mention the whole concept of tipping is a bit messed up.  Can you imagine giving a presentation at work and at the end getting an extra 100 bucks because you did a good job?  No.

That being said, I tip at least 15% to avoid looking like a cheap ass.  I hate tipping though.
