Owning your own business

Go get a business degree if you want to own your own business.  You'll learn about the right way to manage and lead your business.  For example, do you know anything about accounting procedures or cash flows?  There's a lot of important stuff that goes into owning your own business that you can't really just learn as you go along.  Also, if you want to start your own business, be ready not to turn a profit for a few years.  One final point about not being interested by an majors:  You can do things that are outside the common job description for that major.  My dad has an accounting degree.  Right now he does acquisitions.  He said the hardest part about his job is that the companies he looks to buy aren't for sale.  I don't know about you, but that sounds interesting to me. 

Owning your own business seems like an awesome goal and props to you.  I'm just saying it's a TON of work and there's a lot of stuff that you need to know.

go abroad, go to uni elsewhere, broaden your horizons before you start out. careful what business course you do, theres so much rubbish out there - do you research before you commit to anything

In my opinion, I think you're a little young to be freakin out about careers and stuff.
Take your time and don't worry about what your parents say. Plan on getting some decent post secondary education in a field that interests you, hopefully that will lead to a career that you will want to stay in. Sounds like a business degree with entrepreneurial courses would be a start.

Get a degree in accounting if you ever want to own your own business. This is what I am doing right now. Basically, you get the degree in accounting, then after working for 3-5 years in an accounting firm, you can start your own business (you will have the experience, cliental, line of credit, etc)

This is some good advice, for this reason, as well as the fact that youll get in good shape, have a nice tan, and will have lots of time to think about shit. While I agree, your a little young to be REALLY stressin out, its good that your thinking about it.

Also, College is really in no way like highschool. Highschool generally sucked, no one wants to be there, including your teachers, and its just not a good place to learn. Dont let your experiences with HS trick you into thinking that college is like that. people who are there typically are truly interested in what they are doing, and that makes a world of difference. Plus you get to learn about a way more broad and interesting array of topics.

about the business thing, thats what im trying to do, and its tough. but I will tell you, best piece of advice, is dont start a business just to start one. if you dont LOVE what your working in, you'll get burnt out faster than you can imagine. Just be cautious. entrepreneurship is really risky, and you dont wanna dive into something you might not be able to stand in the long run.

As for the rents and the music thing, thats rough, but if its what you really wanna do, go for it. show them its worth it, and that your committed. Think about it like this, they are investing in you by helping you pay for an education, and they arent going to invest in something thats not a good bet. if music production is something that just popped into your head, then they'd prolly be right to shut you down. But if its something youre seriously into, and isnt just a passing interest, make it happen. if your serious about it, they'll eventually see that, and will come around.

but the bottom line, and the most important thing to remember, is do what makes you happy. its retarded to pay for an education just to spend the rest of your life miserable. If you really just focus on the things that you enjoy, and can keep exploring and perfecting those areas of interest, good things will happen. Just go with the flow your first year, keep an open mind, and see what happens.

If you want to be in music, maybe go with a sound engineering degree?  It's obviously not like a normal eng. degree. pretty sure you can get it at college (Canadian definition of college) and not in university. you can get into a ton of industries like that. film, music, and you would definitely have the ability to open your own business if you were good at it. But business degree's are fun to i suppose.

As for looking at college's without having ideas on a major, it doesn't really matter. If you find a good school with a good reputation you could apply under stuff like general studies in social sciences, or other shit like that. Go there, figure out what you like and dislike, and then pick a major in second year.

go for a degree in entrepreneurship if you want to start your own business. teaches you everything you'd need to know and most school require you do interships in order to receive the diploma. that's exactly what i'm going to school for right now

if youre still in high school i wouldnt worry about it right now. if you feel you want to go to college just find a decent college that you like the area but not too much to get in the way of school and just take a broad range of classes your first couple years and see if something interests you. the college will help find something you want to do. there really are a lot of resources in college to help you out. but yeah owning your own business is pretty cool but it is a lot of hard work and if you have a non caring attitude right now i would say its definitely not for you.

im trying to start my own motorcyle shop right now. i can tell you, it's fuckin tough as nails. esp dealing with a lot of people and all of their drama. find something you very truley love if you wanna do it. i love motorcycles but i hate the industry. im out to prove myself by being my own boss is my main goal. be prepared for no social life and working 100 hr weeks when you do good. have freinds that will help you out for 5 an hour. keep bills paid. if people work for you, keep them happy at all costs or they will fuck you. hire people smarter than yourself and listen to them. understand what they say. dont waste profit. reinvest every dime.

Holy fuck, this thread is giving me a whole "What the fuck am i going to do with my life" epiphany.

But what i think i want to do is: go to school and study photography and business. start my own photo company, specialize in action sports (skiing) Or only do skiing. Do what i love and gat paid. that is all.

Where are you planning to go with that degree?

I'm majoring in Evironmental Planning and Policy, which sounds like it could be almost the same thing, and I have very few ideas about what I could do with a degree in it.

Chances are, I will also be getting a degree in Geography at the same time, so I should have to fields to look into for possible careers.

my girlfriend is majoring in environmental science and i kinda wanna know what she is going to do with it as well. i'm pretty sure that she is going to do some graduate work but im not really sure what she is planning on for a career.

i kinda wanted her to start a consulting firm for businesses that wanted to become more environmentally friendly or start working with a well known construction company and start a "green" division. i think the commercial sector is going to expand greatly in this area in the next couple years so i would hop on that shit. 

Yeah, at this point I am planning on grad school. Virginia Tech and the University of Washington are currently my favorite prospects for graduate work.

As others have mentioned owning your own business isn't something that just happens. You'll need a business degree. Secondly, what kind of business are you thinking of owning? Especially if it's starting your own venture, you're really going to need that degree, it's not something you can just jump into without having an idea of how a sole proprietorship works. To add to this, owning your own business is a hell of a lot of work, and the attitude I got  from your post made it seemed like you wouldn't be very committed to it. just my 0.02, no need to be offended.

Secondly, who gives a fuck what your parents think. It's your life, and as hard as it may be, you shouldn't look to make them happy and end up hating what you do. Have you sat down and talked to them about this? (Although to be fair, I probably would've shut you down on music production too. Its a very long road to the top. A college degree, an internship at a production company, etc. it wakes a ton of work.)

I'd suggest finding a large college and do a year of different courses. Find something that interests you and follow it. No matter what you choose to do, don't expect to half-ass job at it. If you want to be happy it means giving what you love your all.

To reiterate, forget (harsh word but nonetheless) about your parents. If they can't be proud of you knowing that you're doing what you  love with a passion, then its not worth worrying about.

All good things come with time. Be happy you have the opportunity to go to university and eat every day. Try to get a hard working job like the others in this thread said. Working puts things in perspective, more than a classroom ever will.

Go into relastate.. Be a landlord.. Chill job has the opportunity to make tons of money. Loan some cash to get started, pay off the debt as you go and make some money!

I'm going to tell you something. Most of your friends that are so sure about school... aren't going to end up doing anything close to what they go to school for.

On a side note... I own my own business doing web design. I make an extra $1000 to $2000 a month doing it on top of my current "job." My portfolio is getting me interviews with Hurley and S4 though. As well as Malakye which is where I will hopefully be interning the next 3 months.

Granted I can agree with most of what you're saying however, you still have an archeology degree and you are applying for jobs that would be much easier to get with a business degree with preferably a major in marketing or finance. If you are completely considering owning your own business then you would not be mentioning interviews or degrees. You would have taken your experience and branched off on your own. The route you're presently going down does require a more "useful" degree then archeology. Nonetheless, you're resume is very impressive and there no doubt with your past experience you will do something big but to others out there who aren't as go-getter and resourceful or involved I think they should stick to a degree that might not be as fun or enjoyable that makes life a bit easier on the job market. Either way it's nice to know there are such dedicated/entrepreneurial women in the ski industry today. Cheers.
