The Dirty Side of the Glass- Photos

Sooo, I have had tremendous leeway in my Canadian Studies english class this term. The prof, who I'm pretty sure has a crush on me (but thats another thread, another time), has let me respond creatively to every prompt we've had. As a substitute for my term essay she let me do a kind of mini photo essay accompanied by a 1500 word write up (if people want to read it I'll post it). The photos are from Vancouver's Lower East Side (aka Canada's worst neighbourhood and home of the murder victims of the now notorious serial killer Robert Pickton) and are generally centered around my own journey down there and my goal of seeking out humanity in an area constantly regarded as "the other." wow amazing shots i have to agree the first is my favorite as well, but all are amazing.
I was just about to go shoot a friend at a baseball game and you just gave me some inspiration! Great work

The first and last picture are ill, looks sick with the white wall in the back with people in front of it. Keep up the great work man.

an old (got it for high school grad so about 4 yrs ago) Canon 20D and most of these were just laced up with the old kit 17-85 ef-s lens on.

ahhh, pretty much 3 or 4 dedicated days of shooting spread out across the last month or so (shooting a full card and spending about 2-3 hours in the area each time). Then, in total, I'd guesstimate about 6-8 hours in post doing editing and selecting images which made some kind of sense together. Then a couple hours writing captions and about 2 hours on the 1600 word write up.

These are sick man.  Thats sweet that your teacher lets you do that, and you've been really successful in capturing the essence of your subjects, I think.  My dad loves these.

One thing he pointed out to me though - he makes a good point.  In photos 2 and 5, you seem to have colorized something.  In 2, the yellow smiley stands out, and in 5, you have the blue bag/parking meter.  We, my dad and I, would like those pictures much more if you hadn't colorized them.  They say enough for themselves in subtle colors.

Other than that, these are fabulous.  You do great work, my friend.  You seem to be posting more and more, and let me be honest, I am more and more impressed.  Good work man, keep it up.

the blue one is not colorized at all, just color balanced, no selective desaturation. The one with the ball is a bit selective, the ball was getting lost and originally it was going to be by entry for "out of place" so i really wanted it to pop. Maybe a bit overdone though. Thanks for the critique.

i was at first, but its really a rather safe place to be. Cops are everywhere and most of the people there are far from violent. I'm definitely careful about who, where, and how I shoot but for the most part I've felt surprisingly safe.

wow your pictures are a real inspiration to me. like, almost every one picture is totally solid. i really really like the second one of the old man in the wheelchair. its crazy powerful. and also nice work on your recent photo entry
