How good do you have to be GOOD?

ya just spent the last season really working at the park. im 16 and was just wondering what is really good park skiing at this age. i am planing on competing next year and just need some advice on how much i need to improve. basicly i can do all spins up to 9 hundreds and like backflips and what not. please give me your advice. thanks.

As of this year, your REALLY good when you can double, pretzel to 450 and spin four ways through at least 7

Well Im 16 and I can cork 7 jumps up to about 50 feet,backflip, underflip and 270 onto about everything and I personally consider myself decent but I cant call myself good for my age. Kids are doing what Im doing at 16 when they are 13. Just look at the PG13 contest, if any of them are better then you then your not good.

ya dude. just watching the little kids on those videos makes me wish i had started park a few years earlyer, but its not just what you can do at an early age. its also how much you improve over a season. like all the kids who do park in telluride where i ski the most, were kicking my ass at the begining of the season. and know i have at the most part cot up to them and i just startd to do park this year.

i disagree with that last statement, as all of those kids kill it so hard and they are only a select few. if you are kinda keeping up with those kids, you are doin good. age isnt that big of a deal,, basically only matters for which category you are in for comps.

Well i'm 16 and I can do all 5 (yeah I said 5) cork 9's over like 100 foot gaps. I can 450 to double switch up to pretzel 6 off of about everything. I've also been known double cork various ish around the mountain. YAAAAA i'm a pretty big deal...

But seriously Just do your thing. If you sit there and compare yourself to others all day it's not going to get you anywhere. You'll just turn into the jock of skiing. Improve to your own standards, and what you want and think your level of skiing should be at. Most important though is be sure your still doing it for the fun. Don't turn into some competitive junkie where all you care about is one uping others.

If I were you I would try to be really creative with your tricks. Trust me tons of kids out there can cork 9 with mute grabs over big jumps, and destroy rails. Do something that separates from the rest of the group.

dont compare yourself to the nation, or the world. youll drive yourself nuts. look at your region. im in the midwest and im not very good on a global scale at all, but im good enough here to get a ski hookup sometime soon. and as long as im skiing on free skis, im gooooooood

Its pretty tough to define a "good" skier.
But for competing
-Unnatural. Learn to spin both ways and you'll do better.
-Lines. Learn how to throw all your "A Game" tricks into a line.
-Consistency. Kinda the same as lines.

and I know its so cliche but have fun. Don't take this shit too seriously or else you'll just start stressing over something you love man!

All my notions of "good" went out the window when a 13 year old buddy started airing age in pipe amplitude and doing cork 12s.

So now I do backflips and ski powder and don't worry about anything but having fun. And that's what skiing's supposed to be about.

i started skiing (learned how to) last year. I can lincoln loop, 270 on and off, and ski deep powder on my park skis.

Go ski at a smaller mountain. People will freak out every time you throw a backflip or a 7.

10,000 hours of practice...at least.

And thats based on real research. Loads of academics have looked at what makes great musicians, athletes, surgeons etc... and they all found one thing in common; they'd all put in at least 10,000 hours practice.

For example, here's a section from the Harvard Business Review some of the world experts on the subject:

'By now it will be clear that it takes time to become an expert. Our research shows that even the most gifted performers need a minimum of ten years (or 10,000 hours) of intense training before they win international competitions. In some fields the apprenticeship is longer: It now takes most elite musicians 15 to 25 years of steady practice, on average, before they succeed at the international level.'

I will never be good and I know it. I won't even try anymore; even if I did, I would not be "good". But I don't care, even just skiing on snow switch is enough for me. <3

I know it's hard sometimes when little groms are pushing crazy tricks and some might look at you like "why even ski if you don't do any good tricks or bust big airs" but it's about what you love to do and what feels good for yourself! I'm sure you will become "good" in the minds of others if you really feel like pushing yourself, but be as good as YOU want to be, OP.

Skiing is awesome.

for me good is liek spinning 5's and 2'ing on... just cuz theres a lot of good kids out there doesnt mean ur not good. and have fun and if u can 9 ur awsome d00d... as in if u have a chance to get a sponsor then man would i love to see a vid cuz that is some rediculous stufff

Seriously, thing is getting ridiculous. Go out and have fun, the rest sill come later. Why is everyone so concerned about sponsorship these days?

I guarantee that the best skiers out there are where they are because they went out and skied as much as they could because they love skiing- nothing more.

Aside- sponsorship is not about what tricks you can do, sure it helps open doors, but what the company wants wants is for you to promote and get more people buying their gear.

Depends on what part of the world you're in. If you are in the midwest, south, east coast you might not need to be able to spin all four 1080s, but you should be able to spin all four 450 outs of a rail.

yeah, I'm at it to have fun... and learning new tricks is part of that fun. In my opinion i suck ass at skiing haha. I can only spin up to 9's consistantly, sometimes cork my natural 7's, spin all 4 7's, and frontflip off pretty much everything. I enter a few comps but that's just because it's really exciting to place 1st or 2nd. And it has been said plenty before in this thread but skiing is Just fun, Its incredible when you learn a new trick or get out there on a bluebird day with close friends who all share the same love. I wouldn't trade that for anything in the world.

im 16 to man i compete all over win some and lose alot. but dont think of it like if your good or not just go on out and enter some comps and get ur friends to come with they are always real fun no matter how well you do if you dont win hopefully your friends will or some onw you know so u can be stoked for them as well. just have fun not about winning man
