Everyone keeps denouncing VA for declaring April as Confederate History Month because they feel its wrong to celebrate or honor Confederates for supporting slavery. Now I didn't read the governors entire 7 paragraph proclamation but from the CNN article from the OP it does not sound like VA is celebrating or honoring confederates at all. They merely want to bring awareness to this time period so more people can learn about history.
From the CNN article:
"It is important for all Virginians to reflect upon our Commonwealth's shared history, to understand the sacrifices of the Confederate leaders, soldiers and citizens during the period of the Civil War, and to recognize how our history has led to our present," Gov. Robert McDonnell's seven-paragraph proclamation reads in part.
"This defining chapter in Virginia's history should not be forgotten, but instead should be studied, understood and remembered by all Virginians," the governor's proclamation reads.
The underlined words clearly show that the governors intention is to bring awareness and to teach people the history of the confederacy, a major historical time period in the states history.
Why is everyone assuming they are celebrating and honoring the confederacy or confederate ideas?
