Japans population isn't necessarily high. It is just a lot for the amount of space that is in the island of Japan. When I visit my family in Tokyo (once a year) I noticed much more crowdedness in the city as to that of chicago and NYC.
And although I'm pretty sure your comment was sarcasm, Japan hasn't even seen robots like these until very recently. So there "census" would not have picked it up.
You are correct. Japan's population is going to plummet* in the next 10 years. Japan is filled with a bunch of elders right now and they will soon be gone. The next generation is not so large.
