Me and a few of my friends are going to hike Tuckermans this weekend and were wondering how the conditions are currently?

Has anybody even been there before? Any Stories?

i realllly hope you're not up there in your Gsuit actin like a douche, don't give us all a bad name. Respect the mtn and the other people there. I've been goin my whole life and am really into the park scene, but it just looks dumb to see kids up there decked out in Jiberish and acting like the own the place.

Here's my post

"Well, it was amazing today. stellar warm weather and there was a nice cool breeze that cools you down as you hike. It was a little gloppy in places but overall the snow was really good and fun.

The highest danger right now is falling ice and waterfalls. One guy fell down into a crevasse made by a waterfall, luckily he was not severely injured, but it did give everyone a scare.

Sorry for the dub post.
I'll be uploading the pics tonight or tomorrow. I'd be down to get go up with a group of nsers. I know me and two other friends are planning on going up sometime soon, weather permitting.

Always remember to ask the guys who work there about the conditions.

I've only been up once and it was awesome. I was up Friday April 2nd.

ahhhh...the New Hampshire zoo. In NYC, people jump in bear pits. In New Hampshire, they fall down 30 ft crevasses. /sarcasm :)

a while ago some guy screwed skis to the legs of a couch and took it down from the top. he actually died.

But if you have skis on your feet it's a really fun place and like someone said before, it's a right of passage... you ski that and you are a skier.

It's not that bad.  I originally came from the East Coast.  Never had a chance to ski Tuckerman's; I was just a little kids then.  I knew plenty of people who skied it and you probably have triple the skill they did.  Tuckerman's would be the one reason I would feel an urge to lug my skis back East.

it has nothing to do with lift accessed terrain. it has to do with common sense and any BC knowledge whatsoever. We have the same problem out here at bridger, morons who have no knowledge, no gear, etc, and are endangering not only themselves, but me as well, when they trigger a slide above me and i get buried.


its not an east west thing. its a common sense, safety, and respect for others thing.

just because you have to hike to it doesnt mean you now get to completely disregard the safety of those around you. it has nothing to do with "taking the west coast for granted". i dont care where im skiing, when people thing its cool that some guy just triggered a slide and are riding it down laughing and cheering, with no concern for his safety or the fact that 3000 other people are on their way up to ski the EXACT SAME TERRAIN that just slid, thats not cool no matter where you are.

Not a junkshow, but a happening and a place that's been famous for decades.  Yeah, I might be a little more on my toes than normal if I was skiing Tuck's, so I didn't get taken out by some idiot trying to slide it on a couch.  It would still be worth going.  I remember watching Warren Miller films from the late 70's and 80's where people were just hucking their shit off of it.  One guy threw this huge spread and held it for what seemed like a few minutes.  He landed slapped back on the tails of his skis and then got pitched into a front flip.  He didn't tuck and basically went in head first.  Rumor was that he snapped his neck.  Warrens quote was something like "after hours of hiking you finally reach the top and then you go for Greatness"!  Anyway, skiing Tuckermans is definitely on my Bucket List.

That's why you don't go to tucks for pow skiing, you go for slush skiing when the only danger is crevasses, which is in your control.

And what are you talking about riding it all the way down? Considering a lanche would occur in the first 100 yards of the run I don't think that is very relevant.

Sure a wet slide could happen if it was snowing, it happened last year but I think for the most part they are rare.
I would imagine that by the time most people are hitting Tucks the snowpack would be close to isothermal in which case a climax slide could occur but im sure they are rare. I have never heard of one happening but I am on the opposite side of the country.

Ya I totally agree there are some real gomers there but that is going to happen when you have a large amount of people in a small area. I'm sure most people going there are smart and use common sense. I don't think it's fair to say that everyone who skis there is an idiot. That's like saying everyone at Big Sky is either a fur clad middle age gaper or everyone is a park rat. It's like saying everyone who skis at Bridger is a smelly hippy.

obviously many people go there. no one will ever be the only one thinking about it.

also just google search tuckerman's ravine and the top few pages are all what you need. you should check them before you go because there is lots of information on trail conditions, what you should bring, mountain conditions and weather forecasts.

I don't know if I would go on a weekend, if I did I would be watching other people. The place has so much history though and it seems like it has some sick culture too. Kind of like a classic skate park.

I actually have taken backcountry classes, and always checked the avy conditions before going to tucks you arrogant fuck.

Sorry you bc nerds don't have the balls to get rowdy at tucks with the hearty new englanders.

You probably stay home eating granola while I'm out braaping on "considerable" avy days too.

Tuckermans is a very special place where "extreme" skiing is relatively accessible to a large number of people who would never otherwise get the chance to experience it. Everyone always focuses on avalanche danger, and yes while its possible is not the only issue. Especially in spring crevasses are dangerous and not as obvious as one might think. You also have to remember that some areas of the bowl are in excess of 55+ degrees, a fall at that angle means you WILL NOT be able to stop yourself without proper self arrest techniques and gear, and I have seen many people tomahawking uncontrollably down the face, only to get cheered on by the thousands of onlookers.

Luckily Darwin seems to not know about this place, and most people do come out unscathed. Injuries and deaths do happen though, and it is only a matter of time until it happens again.

When you are up there be smart, think about what you are doing, and more importantly what others are doing around you. Even simple things like wear your helmet at all times , even when climbing. Earlier this season I took a baseball sized chunk of ice to the top of my helmet after some blissfully unaware skier dropped in above me as I was hiking up. I had to purposely duck and take it off my dome to keep from being hit in the chest and possible knocked backwards down the chute.

Maybe its just my patrol, rescue and BC training that makes me say this, or the fact that I have already lost a friend to that mountain, but PLEASE play safe up there. This is not an east or west debate, I have seen people do plenty of stupid shit on both sides of the country, its simply a matter of uninformed and unprepared people is a potentially dangerous place.

They just didn't transform my balls into a mangina. I learned about the bc so I could have skills to use to evaluate risks when I'm out there, not so I could learn how to stay at home because life is too risky.

It has less to do with actual conditions there, and more to do with the other people. I could have all the avvy knowledge in the world, and it still doesnt do me any good when another idiot gets me buried. I can manage the risk factor when its just me, and the conditions. I cant control other peoples decisions.
