Park skiers/riders out of the park

Why can't a lot of them actually ski/ride on other parts of the mountain? I was skiing the Outback at Keystone yesterday and I saw a few guys with tall tees and over-sized gear who were skiing very defensively (hunched over, hands way forward, backseat, etc.). I try to ski park every once in a while, but personally I love working on my form in bumps, off-piste, groomers, carving, etc. You would think that you would learn to ski moderately decent on groomers, and then ski park.

This is my theory...
It depends on the day/time of year/weather.
for example, If its a spring day with the sun shining and 40 degrees, I am for sure going to go shred park. But, if it's January and -10 outside and dumped the night before, I am ofcourse gonna go ski pow. And I agree that it's dumb that people only ski park. like Dane Tudor's seggy in Everday is a Saturday----

how come park is always the odd one out in this argument?

there are people who just race, people who just hit bc, and people who just hit groomers as well.  For some reason the people who only like to ride park are the ones who are labeled as not being able to ski.

I'm sure guys who just race or just carve groomers can certainly suck at dropping a cliff in bc or ripping a pow line just as much as any park rider who focus on one aspect of skiing. 

And if you turn things around you can see how hypocritical and lacking the whole "people who just ride park suck arent real skiers" argument is if you consider that when a dude chillin in the park watches some dude in a speed suit run into a box, snake a run in or fuck up a lip thats not made just to be jumped off the side of he is probably thinking that the guy who just did that doesn't know shit about skiing either.

what drives me nuts the most is this emphasis on "being the best all around skier" that you can.  the people who are the best at shit are that because they specialize in and work hard on the part of the sport they love.  thats what makes them great, not trying to just be pretty good at everything

i guarantee you any half decent racer can out ski a park rat out of both their elements. ask any pro bc guy or park guy, almost every one will say they started skiing as a racer or doing moguls.

Well I would at least expect to see a park skier ski decent enough on a groomer. Not everyone knows how to ski moguls or powder. It's a different ball game in those areas.

the reason park is the odd one out in this arguement is what this thread is discussing. There are a few exceptions but ive found that if you see someone who looks like a park rat outside of the park and they suck at skiing they are just tools who suck in the park as well. In the east, there are very few days where the snow is nice enough to go and have fun in the trees or on groomers although if the mountain just got dumped on, i'll be in the trees in a second.

If you look at almost all of the pros, youll see that theyre all damn good at big mountain and i'm sure if you put them on race skis theyd be pretty good too.

FALSE, name someone that had strictly a "park" scene edit in a major film this year that was killing it in big mountain. Movies showcase peoples skills and the majority of pros that ski park for a living ahem god wallisch: are not very good "big mountain" skiers. There are those exceptions to the rules but look where they came from: Tanner Montana, Tudor Whistler(I think), Candide Charmonix, you get the point I wouldn't put very many pros in your sense in the damn good at big mountain category.

word. i was skiing for spring break and there was a big race at the hill, the course was like to runs over from the park and these racers came in , one of them in the full speedsuit.  and me and my friends were quietly laughing at them because all the racers in my area are not all that good at park. anyways , these guys went down and busted out frontflips and shit. it was unexpected

I like to do it all. I have less respect for park riders that can only ski park. Unfortunately many people think all park rats are worthless outside of the park. I was skiin bowls at pc the other day (in my tall attire), and when I asked a guy how to get to another lift he responded by saying "This run is a little too much for you eh?" so I said "fuck you." and proceeded to ski away.

I think the thing that makes park the more chosable out of all ways to ski, is that no matter the weather (to an extent) you can have fun in the park. Its not everyday you can go out and ski powder inbounds and many people dont have the gear and knowledge required to ski the backcountry. As for bumps, IMO possibly the stupidest aspect of skiing. Just generally not fun. But hey, if thats what you like doin keep doin it. Although park is fun, every person who skis should get a chance to go out and ski a bluebird day with a foot of fresh and drop some cliffs. Theres my 2 cents....

You are an idiot. Freeskiing = ski the way you want. I know plenty of kids that to your standards would have bad form but the way they ski is just as challenging. For example i like to ski with one of my knees tucked behind the other because i think it looks and feels cool. To you its probably bad form, but i think ill take my chances and have fun.

Sry for dub post, didn't mean to post first one. anyway, you need the basic skills of skiing to be able to ski park at all. now rails are a different story, but if you are hitting decent size jumps like 50+, you have to ski fast, carve in and everything, etc. to be good in the park you have to be very skilled on a pair of skis and can put them exactly where you want them whether it be for grabs, to pull around a rotation, pretzeling.. you know. especially balance. and if you can carve, go fast, have good balance and great ski control, which you need to be a good park skier, you can't possibly suck at everything else.

because all other kind of skiers, mogul skiers, racers, bc skiers, know the basics of skiing.  That is how to use your edges, carve, shift your weight, essentially how to use your skis.  Park rats don't know these things.  They don't know how to use their skis correctly.

im a park rat and ive always been a park rat, i wont go out of the park unless theres over 6 inches of new snow.  but when we do get a decent amount of snow, ill spend all day skiing the backcountry.  and there have been so many times when ive seen some hardcore BC tough guy try a drop or line and just completely suck, where me and my buddies usually do it with ease. this happens all the fucking time.

ive got a friend who raced for almost 6 years, was super good at it, and just a year ago started skiing park.  he's getting decent at park, but he still has a hard time skiing pow.  when its a smooth slope without any bumps or drops, he's fine but he still cant hit drops or do decent lines very well at all.

and i could care less about how my "form" looks, i respect racers and the hardcore BC guy's just as much as any hardcore park rat, but form can suck a dick, if you want to be all about good form then thats fine but i could care less about it. 
i ski on powder days without poles probably 80% of the time unless im going to be doing a ton of hiking. i get yelled at all the time by douche bags who get pissed about other people having fun.  but i dont care, i just ski by give them a smile and let them have a shitty day while i do whatever the fuck i want and have a shit ton of fun.

I used to ride park all day everyday, then I woke up and realized I was in Lake fucking Tahoe. To be a park rat here is like...a sin. The oppurtunites I have here are endless compared to some kid at a shitty east/midwest resort.

I had been skiing for 11 years before I even touched the park, and I've had my fill of years that were coompletely dependent on it. I definitely love the park and progressing myself, but I just reorganized my priorities a little bit.

This is kinda like me. The first ever time I went skiing I never knew of Freestyle. But when I did all I was doing was spending all my time in the park. The problem with this was that my overall skiing technique wasn't very good and needed improving! I was told my freestyle won't improve much if I don't improve my technique. So I was told to go and get some race training, this is what I did! Now my technique is hugly better and it leads to all sorts of new things which makes skiing sooo much more fun!!!

I just started skiing park like 2 years ago and have been skiing for way longer than that. Things in NJ aren't challenging, ever. None of the places by me have any runs that are hard, I still ski them but I like park. Although I did get to ki some powder in CO last week and god damn... But since I can't do that normally, park it is. I don't dress tall tees and whatnot though, just some baggy grey snowpants and a black coat.

THIS TOPIC IS SO OLD STOP MAKING THREADS ABOUT IT. people who ski out of the park need to get the fuck off of their high horses. seriously. theres a thread like this about once a week it seems. and how often do u see "park rats" making threads about how gay people are that dont ski park? and how many of  you people making fun of "park rats" are blessed enough to live near big mountains that get lots of snow? i bet a lot. I am a park rat. said it. but i also live in central ohio, where my home mountain is 300 vertical feet and recieves 1-2ft of natural snowfall annually. so yea, id probably just give up on skiing if i didnt have parks. done

I started skiing when i was 22 months old so I was already a good skier when i started park last year. I think people who start in their teens go strait to park cus it the cool thing in skiing and almost all resorts have some sort of park set up.

how many people are you basing this off of? if you just saw one group of friends sucking it up in the outback they might have just been a rare case. a lot of park skiers my age that I know are incredibly well rounded skiers because they started pretty early, before park skiing really took off

my local hill is filled with Windell kids, so most of the time if you see a ripper in the park, it means they can likely ski the whole mountain. I have started seeing more and more gapers with twins hunched over in a cross between a tuck and a snow plow, but I think every hill has those. As long as your safe and having fun, and not hanging out on the takeoffs and landings of jumps, I say ski whatever makes you happy.

guess ill tell my story first so that my proceding comments will have value.  I started skiing around 5 and was in a race program for a couple of years. but that got extremely boring.i always hit the park when i had time. ofcourse i would just hit the jumps cause i had no interest in rails but eventually i started hitting them, and not just riding straight acrossed them. all the racing i did taught me how to use my skis to their potential.  and that was a long time ago. ive been freeskiing for a really long time now and I tend to spend most of my time in the park. but i have an excuse. good groomer days in main are extremely rare. most of the days we might as well just bring ice skates instead of skis as they'd probably work better. there is also no such thing as a powder day or a good back country day in maine. this is the reason i spend most of my time in the park hitting rails. take any park rat from the east coast and bring them out west to hit some BC lines and i guarantee you they won't go back to the east.  the ice also makes it quite hard to crash on the landing of a jump and walk/ski away unscaved. i guarantee eating shit in maine hurts a lot more than eating it a keystone. now that i've somewhat justified my park ratliness, ill admit how much i hate seeing kids that didn't learn how to ride down the mountain, just going straight to the park. they just ski so that they can look cool hitting boxes and rails. i also hate help threads that start with "i'm new to skiing and decided i wanna hit the park." the only advice i give to new skiiers that wanna hit the park is "learn to ski first. once carving down the mountain at 50mph gets boring, then you can go in the park." being able to ski only makes park easier.

Well it's just one of those things that is expected. Wouldn't you expect a park skier to at least be able to ski on a groomed black run? I do.

I used to hate moguls, but now I love them because I know how to ski them. Keystone is definitely not the place to ski them, or any kind of backcountry just because it's Summit. I don't want to move to Eagle because it's too far from Boulder/Denver. I deal because I have impressive clientele in my second season of working at Keystone, and I have fun riding whatever conditions.

i agree some guys are insane in the park but outside the park look really stupid , id rather better all around than just park . not that i dont love skiing in the park but its only one part of skiing
