And also, JD outed me after my brother posted a thread about the US being superior at hockey under HIS own username, which had 500+ posts, and was clearly not an alias, nor was it a troll thread. It just so happened he uses my computer every now and then.

So if the mods are willing to call out people like me, who only ever try to give people advice and stoke on the forums, then they should do it for people like that too.

that "CR.Johnson" post really annoyed me.

As someone who idolized, was inspired by, and spent a little time with him, I took the posts from the day of his death differently than most of NS. It angered me when people were saying "RIP CR" or "he was a legend" when I doubted that it was heartfelt. If you go to his facebook wall for a few days after it happened, it's pretty easy to pick out who spent time with him from posts and who just thought the right thing to do would be to post.

CR Johnson was the most popular search on 2/24/2010. Many people who never heard of him before learned of his story and determination. There will never be anyone else that comes back from an injury the way CR did. Yes, CR's story is inspiring to people outside of the ski world but on the outside, the book wasn't learned about until it had finished. The chapters weren't being written in front of their eyes.

Back to the situation at hand, I don't think that the kid needs to be outed. Mr. MacMohizzle has no undoubtedly used his IP powers to find out where it came from. By now, the poster has hopefully realized the lack of judgment for his actions. I'm not saying that he should get off Scot free either. We all do stupid things on the internet. The impact these actions might be different but it happens.

Just last week I said some pretty racy things in the cold rush chat that weren't appropriate to say but I knew that TJ would be the only one to understand so I said it anyway. I successfully trolled TJ and thought it was funny. Schmuck heard what was said and I would have been banned if he didn't know who I was.

I think these kind of situations should be taken subjectively. It's hard not to get emotion involved on this kind of things. No one is allowed on a jury if they know either party involved in a case. A lot of people who have the power to discipline this kid knew CR so it's hard to treat the situation in a way as if CR had no influence in their life.

A couple years ago, someone stole an NS banner at one a hostile takeover or something like that. After a couple days, the banners were sent back to NS after Doug posted the about the situation and said that they were actually super expensive and NS can't part with them. I wanted the kid outed and I posted that. He wasn't but now that I look back at the situation would have been any worse for him if he was brought to interweb shame.

What the kid did wasn't just trolling though. Trolling is the last vestiges of immaturity, which although annoying, are harmless in the long run.

He came onto a skiing forum, to mock the death of one of the skiing's greatest icons, and a personal friend to many members.

He must have been aware of the hurt, and pain this would cause all those people that has lost a friend, family member, or a hero.

I'm proud to be a skier because we have such a tight community, where everyone helps fuel each other's progression and enjoyment. This was totally out of order.

Nick, as much as I respect and see your opinion, there two things that differ my viewpoint from yours.

The first is that you are caught up in your emotions. Like I said or maybe tried to convey but missed the point in my first post was I said that the people that have to power to discipline him should/need to forget that they knew CR. I'm not condoning this alias's actions. This emotional skew that everyone is facing this post with is really blowing the whole thing out of proportion. Like i said in my first post, juries can't know about the case before being on the jury. I think think if it was someone who hadn't touched your life that you would feel differently.

The second, which really goes to further explain the first,is I think you are thinking that this kid fully thought out what he was doing. I doubt he fully analyzed his actions. Yes, he knew it would cause a stir, yes he knew people would be pissed but i don't think it went any farther than that. It wasn't a personal attack but you are and have been taking it as a bigger deal than it really is. I think situations like this should be discussed and determined how they should be dealt with. There is a mod forum. I'm guessing that is part of what the discussion over there is. I doubt "cr's" post was even enough to break radar over there unless this was another incarnation of the illusive daringharry. In reality, this is just trolling which as you said is harmless in the long run. No one is going to remember that post. No one is going to randomly remember when they found out CR died and then think of that post. I'm not saying the post didn't aggravate me but I think you're taking it too personal.

bam. unless its something really fucked up, just ignore it. giving something that little a lot of attention, like what's happening now, is making the situation worse.

Just dont give trolls attention or acknowledgement. If something is really over the line, PM it to a mod, we'll deal with the responsible parties.

the thing is this was not a troll thread an not a troll. this was a guy who even if he didnt fully think through what he was saying, made no attempt to apologize or make the situation right. He deserves a ban just as much as guys who post other crap on here.

Agreed, but sometimes it goes beyond trolling.  Not sure that IP ban is enough.  Pretty cheap and easy to get new router or something else that changes your IP so you are right back on.  Losing access to your real member account would be worse than having to replace a router.  Not sure how that process works, but outing them seems like it would be the easiest and a more effective way to go.  Mod writes, "this comment under this alias made by this User".  Done.  Let the Karma rape begin.  If they get a little NS ridicule; all the better.

Since I have had longer to think about it and am not quite so pissed off, I'm sure it was someone who was just drunk or something.  Probably regrets it now, but still deserves at least a little Karma Rape on his real Username. 

I'm still pretty pissed tbh. What if CR's family or close friends had seen it, which is a very real risk on here? It would have been horrible for them. One of CR's siblings posted on the page on facebook about their gratitude for the support from the ski community, and this went totally contrary to that.

trust me in that the family would realize what a horrible and obvious the person was and just ignored it so it wouldn't cause more pain than it should. people who never met anyone affected only make it worse by trying to draw enormous attention to it... which seems to be attempted a lot on here.

The person who made the comment was in terrible poor taste, and what possessed them to I have no idea. It has been dealt with though, and not only has the alias been removed, as have their real accounts.

People don't think we can tell who your alias belongs to, those people are wrong...

I think you should change your name to "Thor", god of thunder.  I felt the seismic waves from the impact of your Ban Hammer all the way out here in CO. 

How can mods tell if a person has an alias though? They can just put random information in when they create the account. As much as I would love to see Skithecanada and other trolls out of here, I don't know if mods should be able to ban for trolling.

Fuck it, just permanently ban an IP every time somebody says something we don't like.

if someone is logging on to an alias with the intent of pissing people off and causing trouble they get banned. end of story.
