Jacket vs Shell

I am looking to get a new jacket for next year, the Columbia that I have now was just not made for skiing, and that really tends to shine when I fall and snow goes all the places you dont want it to. I am currently really liking the Orage sven jacket (which I think is a jacket and not a shell).

I was talking to my brother and he told me that he was much happier with his shell than any jacket he has had. On cold days he throws on a long sleeve and rocks a sweatshirt underneath it. And on warm days just a tee and the shell. I was wondering what you guys thought about the whole jacket vs shell debate.

I never need more than a shell. A good technical shell is so much more versatile than an insulated jacket. My insulated jacket is comfy bud I almost never use it.

Like your bro said, layer up if it's cold, and if not just rock a tee.

I have been looking around the net a good amount and am having trouble finding sites that have a good selection of shells, and living in CT there are not many stores around where I could go and expect to really find anything of a selection. +K for suggestions on this one

If there aren't any ski shops nearby you should probably look online if you're willing.

Some sites out there dont specify if a product is a shell or an insulated jacket. Does anyone know tricks to trying to tell the difference? I am really liking the Orage Sven, but nowhere does it say if its insulated or a shell. http://www.orage.com/fw09/#/products/view/?sku=HJM-41-09

I was thinking that the weight per meter squared might be a good way to tell

definitely get a shell or a 3-in-1 jacket (shell with zip out fleece)

it just makes the warm days so much better without insulation making you sweat balls

I don't know much about the sven, but I have the orage retallack which is a shell and I love it. On cold days i wear a thermal and a long sleeve wool shirt and I'm good to go. On warm days a long sleeve tee is all you need under
