Wouldn't be surprised if it was some sort of usage permit thing. Breck closes April 18th....so weak.

Yea, there are a lot of mountains that lease their land from the National Forest Service, and they need to close by a certain date. That is the case for a number of resorts in Utah.

It generaly has little to do with permitting for most resorts. It's more the fact that they get fewer and fewer people. People lose interest, they don't make money. For a resort as huge as Whistler, it makes sound business sense to scale back operations.

for whistler they close whistler at somepoint in april and leave blackcomb open still. Then sometimes they close blackcomb and open whistler fora while to prepare blackcomb for summer skiing and still accomadate skiing at the resort. so yeah, dont worry, there will be a mountain to ski at whistlerblackcomb til late july

whistler blackcomb did fine this year. But every year they always close one mountain and leave the other open. this year whistler is closing early and blackcomb will stay open.
whistler is the best.

this is true at some mountains and others use this excuse as a reason to close early due to low late season ticket sales.

They might not have had the best season for snow, but the Olympics did go down there, which I'm assuming brought in a decent chunk of change.

Telus fest ends 4/25? its closes DURING the telus fest, and like people said, its just whistler not blackcomb.

They always close whistler down for a month or 2 in late April and just keep blackcomb open until it closes in late may and then they reopen whistler.

ya but big park is on bcomb and is the most fantastical dreamland of jumps and whis jumps suck so bcomb isway sicker

Actually Whistler Blackcomb had a great year, 3rd snowiest season ever and the Olympic aversion factor was not as bad as expected with higher than forecasted skier visits. WB is also the cash cow of all the Intrawest resorts.

They're being forced to from what I understand. Intrawest was in debt, but still making money. They missed one of the payments on that debt and therefore they have to put something up for auction to pay for said missed payment.

And Whistler may be closing on April 19th, but Blackcomb, the adjacent mountain isn't.

this is what i want to hear. any idea what the park situation is going to be during telus? i might be coming out that week but i'm hoping highest level isnt closed. i need to his some real jumps. Pennsylvania blew it this year in the park department.

No not at all. Fortress, who owns Intrawest. did not make a loan payment and is in negotiations with it's lenders to restructure their financing. The lenders were threatening to auction off Fortress's debt, which would basically means it would change the ownership of intrawest. So essentially this would mean that was intrawest up for sale. However the auction was postponed for further negotiations.

So Whistler Blackcomb, is not, and has never been, for sale.

Not exactly.  Bears start waking up from hibernation soon and they don't want skiers all over the mountain when theres Bears roaming around for obvious reasons.  ..Damn thats funny as shit to think about.

well they will have the orage masters on the right line in xl park and i've heard that the showcase showdown will be up top aswell (usually its held at the base), that being said the left line should still be open, but not sure. Right jump line in whistler park is still sick though.
