im an ECE major and i currently work at the lab for atmospheric and space physics at CU boulder mainly in mission operations and data systems. good job, good pay, nothing to complain about. i am currently working on the design, test, and building of the microprocessor/comm architecture for the remote sensing package on the MAVEN mars mission scheduled to launch in 2013. I have also been trying to go storm chasing for quite some time and tonight i was enjoying free beer and box seats at the mammoth game with a few guys, one of whom is a Ph D student in aerospace (has BS and MS in ECE and MS in aero too but not relevant). anyway, after being the nerds that we are and talking he offered me a higher paying job to work on the embedded systems of an unmanned aircraft that he flies into tornadoes. This would mean that i get paid to go storm chasing over the summer. This job sounds way more interesting than everything but my MAVEN work right now (MAVEN makes up less that 25% of what i do). but i am getting extremely valuable experience in VHDL right now and i dont know what to do. what would you do in this situation?
After getting all of those degrees you would think that you'd be smarter than asking for life changing advice on a message board that is almost never serious anymore (or always too serious) and dominated by pre-pubescent teenage boys trying to act cool.
take the job that offers the best experience. great experience is worth more than it's weight in gold when it comes time to find a "real job", i.e. one outside of the university setting.
Personally I would stick with CU. It looks alot better on your resume, plus I feel like sticking with CU has more career advancement potential/youd make more valuable connections.
He's asking for advice, not for someone to make the decision for him. NSG is a great way to get a different opinions on anything, for the exact reasons you stated.
for reals. but remember when i tried to go storm chasing last year? they just offered to pay me to do that and fly remote control planes at the tornado...
