Cutting/shortening Carbon/Graphite Poles

My scott graphite poles are a perfect length for all mountain shredding, but are too long and clumsy in the park.

Now I know how to shorten regular alloy poles, but am a bit scared to try with these.

I'm guessing they'll splinter/crack/shatter when I try cutting them?

Anyone tried this/heard anything about it?

Try wrapping the portion that you want to cut with duct tape or some other thin durable tape and cut them with something that has alot of RPM like a dremel tool to get a smooth cut and then put your handel back on the shaft with the tape still on if possible and then then use a rubber mallet to get it back on.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A FRESH SHARP BLADE on the hack... if you take that route and saw really fast

sharp blade is nice to have...but make sure youre using a fine tooth blade, like smallest teeth possible. similar to metal cutting blades i guess. big tooth saws will shred the carbon apart and fray it

Yeah I think I'll just leave it for now.

I'm going to go see if a ski shop will do it when winter starts down here, that way if they fuck it up, I get a new set of poles.

I'll probably buy/steal a cheap second hand pair of short poles for park.

I hacksawed mine and they lasted half a season.  Now they are just FUCKED not even kidding when I say they're split into100 pieces.  At least it's still all one piece and I can still use it on my summer setup but I can't put any pressure on it.

use a hand grinder (construction tool) like a dewalt.   Put a diamond blade on it (borrow this setup from anyone who makes a living doing construction work)  Make sure and use eye protection and goggles.  I use this set up to cut all kinds of shit.   Practice first on  something besides the pole that is the same material (like a fishing pole from a garage sale or something)  If the test results are as you like , proceed on to the ski pole.

Do you have a dremel tool? If so, put a cutoff wheel on it and it will cut real easy with minimal, if any, splinters.

I cut down my Swix race pro poles that are carbon with out a problem...

You guys must be complete idiots to fuck this up. I cut mine yesterday and it's no big deal. Put masking tape around where you're going to cut and then mark where you're cutting all the way around as a guide. Then hacksaw slowly rotating the pole so it cuts down gradually, don't just saw right through. And don't try to use a pipe cutter.

Haha yes exactly.  I found it exactly the same as cutting aluminum poles.
