tele jibber whats a good entry camera?? i want a Nikon, something similar to the rebel or something, ive never had a nice camera before so i want one that can do everything and is a good entry-level camera...any ideas?

I shoot, now this list sucks to type makes me realize how much money i have sitting in a bag.

Canon Eos 3 with verticle grip (grip is key)
lenses- Canon 28-70 f2.8
Canon 70-200 f4.0
Canon 50mm metal mount f 1.8
Sigma fisheye 15mm
Sunpak PZ 5000 flashes
along with tons of filters and other stupid things that add up, tripod, backpack etc...

Now my advice, go canon, their lenses are well beyond nikons. Most of my friends who shoot serious go with canon over nikon. Pentax makes some good stuff for the level you want and is economical. The good thing about buying good stuff is it holds its value fairly well most of my lenses i can sell for like 90% of what i paid for them. Look at the Elan II, its a step above the rebels faster and shots several frames per second. Lenses get a 50mm 1.8 they are cheap and great for low light and take amazing pictures...you probably wont find metal ones anymore but if you do get it. Then a mid range zoom like a 28-105 range nothing more. Stick with that for a while, non zooms take better pictures but arent as convienent. STay away from huge zooms like 28-200 or 28-300 their quality is terrible at the ends, unless you spend like 3 grand on a 35-350 canon. Get a backpack, nothing worse than not having a way to carry your gear...then for a filter get a circular polarizing filter. Need that with the harsh light from snow and it makes a sky really blue. I hate taking pics while i ski cause i want to ski remember that part, when you have a camera on your back you cant go off the jumps. So hopefully you have other things to shoot besides skiing or else its probably not worth buying a whole set up. BUy a cheap manual first learn to shoot it that will make your shots when you shoot full auto (which you wont actually shoot auto) that much better.

I dont know about that river riper, i have heard that many pros shoot nikon because it is soo much easier to get a good lense for them, you have to admit that nikoor makes some awesome lenses, for the dude that wanted the entry level you could prob get the nikon 65 which isnt bad, it is basicly nikons equivlent of the rebel 2000, the nikon 80 is going to be my first good camera but since i shoot footy i a trv900 and im used to manual settings im getting that, it is a lot better then the 65 because it incorpaartes features from the f100 for very cheap but yea i still cant decide on what lense(s) to get, what would you do if you only had 200 bucks to spend on a lense

I wont bore you with talk about specifics for both companies, it boils down to personal likes. The feel of the body will fit everyones hands differently thats part of the reason i shoot all canon stuff, the body i find much easier to work than my dads nikon. As for lenses in the few hundred dollar range thats a tough one...For a zoom, if you want to stick with a nikon there isnt anything for the most part except for the one that comes with the packages, and generally those are pretty cheap plastic lenses. You are better off putting your money towards a good lens instead of a body, the body holds the film the lens takes the pictures. I am a huge fan of 50mm normal lenses at f1.8 they can take pictures at night with minimal light and their optics are the most basic design possible since they do not magnify there is no problem with distortion and at 100 bucks they are very economical. They arent the best lens for skiing but it just takes a little more effort to set yourself up in the right spot. Its an investment too, you may have to spend 400-500 bucks to get a decent lens but unlike skis if you take care of it, it will last more than a few years. I shoot with some of my dads stuff from when he first started and its 30 years old and it works great. Now when they try to sell you a UV filter buy one a real cheap one, dont take pictures with it on though it is just good at protecting the lens but they hurt image quality. Buy a circular polarizing filter too, cost like 30-50 bucks for a decent one depending on size...they will make your pictures look much better. IF you shoot lots of black and white get a red 25 filter, it adds a lot of contrast and that is needed with snow. hope thats a little helpful. OH my best advice, go to your local ritz or whatever camera store look at the camera and lenses, then go online to BH's site and buy it off there you will save tons of money

yea ive checked prices out i live in ny close to brooklyn so im pretty much near camara store central, so i have found the best prices, there is this one amazing nikon 24-120mm lense that seems sick, and it only costs $499 plus you get a 100 rebate, fuck man, this stuff cost too much, ive gota start dealing, or find a hook up, anyone know a good source, o yea, brah are you looking for a cammera or camcorder man

k how much money do you have to spend, low budget around $600 you can get the canon xr20 which is pretty good, takes good pictues, high end you can get the sony trv900 3ccd and shoots sick footy, only thing is that the best picture quaility it takes is 640*480

being that my school is rich as fuck and they give me upwards of 10,000 a year towards photography equipment ive had a chance to shoot nikons and canons top slrs. River ripper is right, it is totally on preference, your grip and features you want. I went with the nikon f5 because it was the one i found to be the best for me, but the top of the line canon slrs are just as good if not better for other people, if you get a chance go out and try the cameras and see what you like.

ALso, who ever was looking for that gl1, look at the sony vx2000, much better in my opinion

Skiing In New Jersey Sucks-Trust Me

I got a Minolta Maxum 5 with 28-80mm lens(275 dollars) and have an additional 75-300mm lens (145 dollars).

I got a Minolta because it offers all the features of the Canon Rebel and Nikon something-or-other and also has 1/4000 shutter speed and eye-start focus, both of which are super nice for getting action shots. I first read reviews of the camera and lenses before buying and found that the only thing that people did not like about the Maxxum 5 is that it is very small and for some people, hard to hold, but I got used to it (and I have huge hands).

I also went to several stores and pretended that I wanted to buy a camera from them to see what they thought was best (I eventually bought online)

go to a store, ask questions, pick up the cameras and try em out. you cannot go wrong with a REBEL or Maxxum, they are both excellent lower-level cameras; though I found the maxxum to better suit my needs.
