Alta to Extend Season and Rumored to be Opening Up to Snowboarding

Alta announced that it will reopen the weekendfollowing its scheduled closing date of April 18th conditions permitting. It isrumored that this extra weekend will allow Alta to introduce snowboarding toits slopes without violating the terms of the season pass agreements. Both Taosand Aspen (Ajax) made similar moves the season before they opened tosnowboarding.

What does the Newschooler'scommunity think about the prospect of Alta being being open to snowboarding? Ifit were to happen would it influence your decision to ride Alta and how so?

the amount of cat walks at ALTA would make snowboarding kinda difficult. alot of unstraping... but cool!!!!!

This would suck for everyone involved and i hope alta sees that and decides not to do it.

Imagine a snowboard with no trial map getting onto cecret thing that its gonna be a sick chair and then realizing that it just brought them a total of 300 vert. in like 10 minutes. I just had a little giggle about that

Never been to Alta but if the traverses are really like this i dont even want to ski it let alone snowboard it lol.

There are two completely different vibes at alta and snowbird. I'm not saying one is better than the other but i've gotta say the difference is snowboarding. I love Alta and i really don't want to see it change anytime soon.

Alta will not be allowing Snowboarders.  The mountain would be less than optimal on a snowboard due to the flats/traverses and this would blow the whole 'Alta is for skiers' marketing campaign that Alta has been using for a long time.

why do my words suck?  Because they are the truth?  Do you really think Alta is going to allow snowboarding this season?  This is just a dumb rumor. 

Its snowinging in the mountains, should not be arguing about stupid things.

I work up there too and haven't heard a word of this, we have monthly meetings with onno too.

If I were a snowboarder i'd rather go to bird anyways...

i have skiied at alta for the vast majority of my skiing life, and this is the first year i will not be up there, primarily because i got sick of not being able to ride with my boarder friends. i think that alta changing to snowboarders would be a mixed blessing though. when there are so many snowboard friendly resorts out there to go to, its nice to have a little escape like alta occasionally.

if you ski Alta, or at least have skied Alta once, you would realize overall this will bring a lot more negative than positive. If you haven't skied Alta, your opinion means very little.

Alta's been around much longer than snowboarding has been. It started out as SKI resort and it will remain a SKIERS only resort.

Did you even read the thread?

You ignorant kids who haven't ski alta before don't fucking get it. Snowboarders would not like alta. You have to traverse like 1000ft minium every run, usually a lot more if you wanna get fresh tracks.

David have you skied there? Most of the Good terrain you have to do little traverses/sidestep hikes etc. to get there. THe mountain would not work well for snowboarders and having snowboarders walking along high traverse or up devils castle or something and in your way would really suck. Ride with your snowboard friends at Snowbird, its also a great mountain.

Noj1080- grow up homie. snowboarding is outrageously fun, and so is skiing. They are totally different so its not really possible to make a valid comparison. Snowboarding will never die. Let those who enjoy different things than you shred where they want. As long as they are having fun then they deserve any place just as much as you do.

Yeah, as stated already, I snowboard as well and would never take my board to Alta. It would be a waste of a day. I wouldn't be able to ride any good stuff and it would be exhausting. It's just not setup right.

Have you not been reading this thread? Alta doesn't allow snowboarders because it's a safety issue. Imagine you're cruisin along relatively fast on a traverse. You come around a corner and suddenly you're confronted by 5 snowboarders trying to hop along or hike and are blocking the path. What's the logical outcome of this situation?
