I have been out of college for almost a year now and have yet to even get an interview the job market sucks out there. I ended up working for some shitty ski store, and now the season is over I'm fucked for work. Looks like I'm heading back to school to get a masters because now a days that is what you need to get a job that pays more then 30k a year, it is sad the times we are living. but hear my words stay in longer ride out this fuck up world we live in right now.

Were only pissed because we don't get to party as much as the business majors. And yes alot of engineers are complete losers but not me I sure as hell have a good time when I do have some.

Im graduating next may (should be this year, but Id rather have a life in school and stretch it over 5 years) with a BS in architecture. Ill ski for a year, then go back for a masters for 3 years. Hopefully the economy doesnt completely suck ass in 5 years when I get out then, but Ill have a double masters and should be ok.

majors don't really mean anything and most schools don't matter either. I was a poly sci major with shitty grades at KU but I worked a decent sales job, owned 2 atms, and passed the series 7, thats not a claim bc my point is it isn't hard and academic achievements mean nothing compared to real life stuff.

If you really only care about money you can go that route. But if you care more about life and being happy, and don't mind making a few sacrifices (like not living in a mansion), you can go with the "soft option". Chances are, you'll be more happy and satisfied with your life--that is, unless material wealth brings you more happiness.

If you get off to being useless, enjoy your life.

I enjoy making systems more efficient, and finding creative and new solutions to problems. I like being able to make sure a bridge that will carry 10,000 cars a day does not fall into the river. It just so happens that most DOT's do too, which is why they are willing to pay me a good amount too. Its really just coincidence that being helpful to society also happens to pay well (well not really since that is how capitalism works). The fact is, no one cares about what you can argue with your poly sci major bs; and thats why they don't really pay you to do it.

I am about to graduate from Electrical Engineering at UT Knoxville with a 3.7 GPA.

I turned down $92,000 a year starting at ExxonMobil to go to grad school. I am getting a tuition waiver, health insurance, $3000 a month over the summer and $1200 over the school year to keep going for my MS.

dude, i am really happy for you and your bridges, and I am going to let you finish.
but there are a wide variety of jobs out there, that require different skills. not every engineer could teach a class of kindergarten students, translate chinese to english, manage a business, or write a literary masterpiece. and yes these are all skills that the world needs. so keep an open mind about other areas of work. kthx

1. some of the best teachers I had growing up were former engineer's who then got a masters in teaching.

2. Or just realize that the Chinese are born speaking english these days. And the best way to learn a language is just immerse yourself in it. Not have someone give you a bunch of flash cards with sayings on them.

3. Actually, we are really damn good at it. and why you find a lot of engineers running businesses. And the ones that don't, well they hire industrial engineers.

4. Nope, but then again no one gives a fuck about reeding catcher in the rye 2.0. catcher in the rye 1.0 sucked balls by the way. So no, the world would be just fine with out people who can write literary masterpiece.

Worthless majors generally are worthless.  However, academic achievements are relatively important in regard to non-worthless majors.

like everyone is saying in this thread, pick the right major and you'll always have a job.  Don't be the millionth person with a BA in business or communications.  There's no jobs there. 

I graduated last spring and I had a job offered to me before I walked for my diploma.  I studied medical laboratory science because there is a huuuuuge shortage of young people to take job positions of people retiring.

yo you need to chill I agree with most of what your saying but engineering puts you in that competitive view on things like this. My good friend is going for his masters in writing next year. Is he going to make any money doing so?...most likely not (and hes going to have insane debt). But it really makes the kid happy so I never even talk down on him for being a writing major.

I'm an Environmental Science and English double major. I'm not going to be "useless". I'm going to enjoy life and not make money my top priority. Also, don't try to give me shit about being an Environmental Science major just because you don't believe in global warming. I haven't taken a stance on global warming yet--I just believe that when you factor climate out, and don't even think about it, you realize that we're still fucking up this planet and I'd like to help change that.

I think engineering is a great option but frankly, it's not the only one.

i am an english major as well and every engineer i know has that same cocky attitude. i have studied what i enjoyed the most. i could never study engineering or business or anything like that because i would be fucking miserable. it is cool if that is your thing however

Oh Im an engineer I work sooo hard you could never understand , I'm gonna be rich too just wait heres the salary they offered, you'll never be as happy as me because I study engineering, anyone who isn't an engineer will lead a shitty miserable life because nobody works as hard as engineer, engineers are gods compared to anyone who isnt an engineer ... fucking jerk me off, you guys are lame as hell.

My best friend is an AEROSPACE engineer and he's nothing like you faggots, get out of the studio, go do something that actually makes you happy for a half hour and shut the fuck up about how great you are. Because honestly most people who aren't engineers could give a fuck less that you are an engineer.Iits not like you're a brain surgeon or something that makes people say "god damn" when they hear what you do for a living.

I had an architecture professor say something along the lines of: You can always tell when you walk into a building designed by an engineer. Everything is well-lit and ventilated, the plans make total sense, and you immediately want to leave.

You, of all people, should be well aware that specialization isn't the worst thing in the world. You wouldn't hire an accountant to design a skyscraper, just like I probably wouldn't go around town interviewing engineers to find a fly tying instructor or the next great American novelist. The world would be a mind-numbingly boring place if things could all be felt and realized with equations and theories.

Are you also going to be one of those environmental whatevers who is barely able to pay his bills?   Its all nice and dandy to say you money isnt your main priority but you need money to live.   If you wanna ski, snowboard, travel, buy things YOU NEED MONEY.   Most people i know with your major barely make enough to pay their bills.   Good luck in trying to achieve but you have a long hard road.   Hey, everything is this go green crap, might have a strong chance to get a job in DC, no skiing there though.

Im a CJ and sociology double major and there will always be jobs out there for me.   Corrections, Law enforcement, courts never going anywhere.

Engineers are cocky, no questions asked.   Social Skills, zero, and common sense ZERO.   but they are smart in school.    If your willing to spend 6 years in school go for it.   But every person i knew or know who is an engineering major is a fucking coward, they run whenever they dont like what someone has to say.   Not saying all are but the ones i know are.   There are alot of majors that are just as useful as engineering, i dont understand the god complex of most engineers though?

The truth is;

There are jobs out there, just got to look closer and the key is to just meeting people and just asking around about where some work might be. You can't always rely on just turning in a few apps. Hell, I met an employer on the chair lift one time..

Just don't forget that you still have to start out small even out of college. You can't start at the top, so start at the bottom and work your way up.

Yes I do agree it is a good time to be in school though if you are already in it.

Engineer is a good degree, however the problem I have with them is that they over design shit and charge you too much money for what they do. Plus its a job where you are probably spending a shit load of time on a computer which gets old to me at least for doing work.

Graduate school is good but it isn't completely necessary if one just gets out there and gets his/her ass to work and wants to taste the real world. I find I can learn alot just on my own. I do have a degree in Archaeology, I have not made any money in that field but I have made money in all different kinds of jobs so I've gained different knowledge. You got to be able to do all kinds of different things in this economy and work a couple diff jobs if you can.

I grew up with parents that placed too much of an emphasis on money but because of that I more than completely understand the value of a dollar, and how to manage myself and my money. I don't know what you mean by "environmental whatevers", but as far as I know right now I may end up as one. What constitutes an "environmental whatever"? Just because I've decided that it probably isn't a great idea to drive an SUV, that the needless waste of materials and food that occurs in our society today is harming us, that all of the chemicals we put onto our land and into our bodies is negatively effecting us, and that I would rather help create solutions to these problems and preserve our planet makes me an "environmental whatever"?

By doing an environmental science degree and an english degree I'm doing something that I love--I might not be living in the absolute fucking million-dollar houses that all of you successful engineers are going to be living in, but I sure as hell am going to be happy with my life.

this thread has turned into an absolutely retarded argument.
i have absolutely nothing against engineers, I've had two roommates who are engineers, my dad and step-uncle and about 300 of my cousins are engineers, one of my coworkers is an engineer and my ski instructing course conductor was an engineer.
so it baffles me that some of you think sciences and engineering are superior to arts. the world would be a boring place without art and innovation and subjectivity. do you like music? do you like web pages that look nice? do you like films that have beautiful cinematography (or just any films)? sure engineers can do these things, but they had to learn them from somewhere or someone. so don't tell me that the study of these areas is not worthwhile.
and by the way, a lot of people who learn english as a second language have a lot of trouble with it. most don't start studying it early. for example in japan kids start in grade 5. i would assume it's about the same in china... maybe later or not at all in rural areas.

When I say environmental whatevers, its because everytime, someone trys to explain that major to me, i zone out because its not very interesting to me.   I understand the whole go green thing but thats about it.   I am huge into landscaping and gardening so i understand what chemicals go into the earth with food growing and stuff.   There are way to many but I cant really taste the different between organic and non. 

I know what your saying about the whole millionaire thing, Im a CJ major, prob one of the most under paided out of everyone because we are the ones who keep everyone safe (ie cops, prisons, probation, social workers).
