I have been out of college for almost a year now and have yet to even get an interview the job market sucks out there. I ended up working for some shitty ski store, and now the season is over I'm fucked for work. Looks like I'm heading back to school to get a masters because now a days that is what you need to get a job that pays more then 30k a year, it is sad the times we are living. but hear my words stay in longer ride out this fuck up world we live in right now.

Regardless of what major you are, it is a bad time to be looking for a job. Even if you land one, you will be making less than you would have if you had graduated 2 years or go (or presumably 2 years from now).

I am graduating at the end of the year and likewise i think i probably should go to grad school to do a masters.  I dont really know what to do although taking a year off working and travelling does sound tempting. Truth is academics on paper matter and you need to stand out amongst everyone else

Truth is academics on paper do not matter. What does matter is how you network yourself - who you meet, how hard you try to network, etc.

blah, blah, blah the job market sucks, the economny sucks. you have to hustle if you want to make money. waiting around for someone to give you an interview isnt going to get you anywhere and the longer you wait the harder it gets. be entrepreneurial. do something on your own if you cant find someone else to work for. what did you do to better your situation over the winter other then sell some skis and send out some resume's?

I'm a marketing major and there are plenty of jobs out there, even Vancouver where the tendency for job availability is to be lower
my guess is sociology, history of 16th century europe, or women studies aka a BA

i'm a marketing major.  i'm aware it's not the greatest major, especially for right now, but there's plenty of jobs/internships/opportunities out there.  then again, i go to a decent school with lots of places to look and people to help.  but in terms of majors, one could be in a way worse situation.

basically there are engineering majors, and then soft options. if you went soft option, then no shit you don't have anywhere to work since you spent the last 3-5 years of your life learning how to find all the hidden meanings in a poem, or something else no one gives a fuck about.

now if you busted your balls and got an engineering major, then you would be looking at a nice starting salary around 50,000-120,000 depending on your field of expertise, oh and you would have been hired almost right out of the starting gate since there is nothing in this world that would not be better off with out an engineer.

ha ha yea I got a couple internships to choose from this summer and im an engineer.  Even if I didnt get a job in an engineering field I know that I have the work ethic to do anything I want after getting my ass kick for the past three years. I feel that just the experience of going to college is worth it as long as you are searching for your potential. If you go to college and find yourself drinking almost everynight and getting by you are not there yet and therefore not exploring you potential well enough. You have to be able to give up some things.

thats true there are definitely opportunities out there if your look hard enough

but for most companies in a bad economy marketing type jobs/departments are one of the areas seen as expendable...and receive the first and/or most cutbacks

not to say there arent companies out there excelling/emerging in this market in need of those type of professionals

get a bachelors. then get a masters with a decent job through your school. have your new company pay for you PHd and reimburse some if not all of your masters payments. end up with a dope job, a PHd that can take you anywhere if said job doesnt work out. and lots of money from said PHd. voila.
i havent even started going to school yet but when i do, im staying in as long as fuckin possible.
