I've heard its going to be a demonstration sport, apparently they want slope too. The people I talked to are quite involved in the sport and know a lot of people, so I think its legit. Hopefully its done well, I'm going to be super critical of anything the IOC screws up with it. If its done well though, I'll be stoked.

cuz they will judge it brutally and force everyone to do huge jumps that have no style, just difficulty. unless they use slopee skiers to judge.

No, if it gets in (which sounds pretty likely), it will be a full on medal event from the start, same as when snowboard halfpipe was first put into the Olympics in Nagano in 1998.

They no longer do "demonstration sports" before admitting events, in fact they have not held demonstration sports at a Winter Olympics since Lillehammer '94.

If slopestyle ever reaches the Olympic level I foresee terribly inaccurate judging, a below par course, and an overall poorly executed event. I can see the IOC turning slopestyle into another form of aerials and judging would favor difficulty over style and technicality. Also they would probably throw in some new bs rules, such as in snowboard half pipe where riders are forced to take one straight air. In addition, the course would most likely be sub standard to what the riders and fans are used to at other pro level slopestyle comps. Just look at the difference between the 2010 Olympic halfpipe and the 2010 Xgames halfpipe. Plus we already have tons of legit pro level slope comps anyways: Dew tour, Xgames, European Xgames, etc... Believe it or not, the Olympics need us more than we need them, and I do not see anything good coming out of slopestyle being admitted to the Olympics.

yeah, i dont want slope in.
i would like to see skier pipe but not if they make one straight air mandatory. then all the top pros would do a staight air in all the major pipe comps being as riders usually have the same run to keep it consistant, much like all the boarders in winter x all boosted strait. id much rather see peter o do a 27ft flat 5 then just a staight air.

couldn't have said it better myself. it would be sweet to see pipe get in, as long as there aren't any BS straight-air rules. But i think that slopestyle is something that the IOC just wouldn't be able to get done right.

This is sick. Whatever other arguments you might have, the olympics is the worlds biggest stage for winter sports and it's great the skiing will finally be there.

you're so right, because skiing has yet to make an appearance in the winter olympics.

personally i think that extreme sports should stay out of olympics. that includes free skiing and snowboarding. the olympics are just going to fuck them up and not give an accurate representation of what freeskiing really should look like.

You guys really don't get that straight air thing at all, do you?

First, it's not that "The Olympics" came up with the straight air requirement. It's actually the other way around, that has been a part of snowboard halfpipe for ever, kind of keeps it from getting too freestyle aerials and forces at least one part of the run to be more about style than technicality.

Second, it doesn't have to be a straight air, it is a "standard maneuver" which is defined as anything with 180 or less degrees of rotation. So air to fakie, alleyoop, switch straight air, etc can all be used as well.

Third, even though having anything be "mandatory" in a run is stupid as hell, 95 % of the boarders still see tricks like that as part of complete pipe riding and still do it even in the events when that rule is not in place. Personally I think it looks awesome to see a massive method in a pipe run, mixed in with all the big super fast spinning tricks, it's a sign of staying true to the skateboarding roots of halfpipe and, if done right, can be the best part of a run.

But anyways, they have the standard maneuver rule snowboarding because that's what they do in snowboard pipe events. There has never been a mandatory trick requirement in any ski halfpipe event (including the FIS pipe comps), so you can guarantee that they are not going to invent a mandatory trick requirement for the Olympics.

Yeah, I really like the straight airs in snowboard runs, soo steezy. Snowboarders do siick straight airs in general. I'm thinking that skiers need to work on the straight airs and 180s. Check Duncan Adam's pipe run for an example of what we need.

 all i can say is,

if skiing becomes organized, ruled, and controlled like moguls/aerials, it will begin to suck,  our sport will loose the popularity it is regaining

By the way in both mogul and aerials the technical difficulty isn't worth very much. So I'm pretty sure the judging would be all right for slope.

Moguls : 50 % The turns (Style)
25% Air (Tricks)
25% Speed

Aerials : 20% Air
50% Form (Style)
30% Landing (AFTERBANG)

This score is multiplied by the difficulty of the tricks. So pretty much like in freeskiing, even if you have the best tricks, if you don't land and grab properly, you won't have a good result.

Olympics and skiing would be sick. Since it'll get more known to older people, the next generation of skiers will be able to attend Slopestyle/Pipe academies just like moguls or aerials.

Oh, you mean like this year at XGames when none of the skiers went as big as Shaun White?

Just had to point it out. No point talking shit on snowboarders when it's not true that skiers are going way bigger these days.

Shaun's first hit was 23 feet, the biggest a skier went (in the actual pipe comp, not the big height thing) was Tucker Perkins at 21 feet.

The snowboarders caught up in the amplitude department, they are sending it these days.

in GENERAL skiers, go bigger then snowboarders in the pipe. if you averaged out every hit of every rider of both sports skiers would take the win.

Not really. Danny, Peetu, Kazu, Ryo, and more, all those guys are going just as big as the biggest boosting skiers. And there's a lot of the skiers that are sick but aren't really going that big either if you pay close attention.

If you averaged everything out like you say I'll bet you would be surprised at just how close the two sports are, amplitude-wise, these days.

since freeskiing is already pretty legit on it's own, why wouldn't they just adapt the same judging standards that are employed at the xgames and other freeskiing events? (except txt voting, that was bullshit)

THe judging at X games and other freesking events is flawed as well.  Look at how many arguments there are in newschoolers about it!  The problem with the judges at X games is that there is no system of accountability.  THere is no process for appeal and that is a requirement at the Olympics (and FIS events).  The X games judges don't keep accurate and separate score cards and they commiserate between each other about who should win, who should get second, etc.  What is wrong with that is first of all, coming up with a decision about who wins together doesn't allow for varying opinions or independent judging perspective.  That may sound unnecessary but a strong personality on the judging panel can convince everyone that a skier made an error (or didn't make an error) even if everyone didn't see it, for example.  After every event in the Olympics there is time for appeals (in moguls it is 15 minutes).  Rarely does anything change but the possibility must be there to prevent corruption.  In order for an appeal to be considered, the judges must each have well documented independent score cards to show how/why they scored the way they did.  I know the argument is that they usually get the podium right (or at least the right people on the podium even if the order isn't always right) but in FIS and Olympics, getting the top 16 and even top 30 in the correct order is very important as well.  (If you are wondering why, it has to do with moving forward in future games, athlete funding from their countries is based on ranking, plus many athletes are at the Olympics for "personal best" even if they don't have a shot at the podium.  You may not care but each Olympian has their own goals and that should be respected.)  X games judges have been quoted as saying that all they care about is choosing the winner, then the podium. and after that who cares.  In the World Cup circuit and the Olympics, they need to care.
 
I don't know how it works in snowboarding (and Tride will likely know) but in freestyle skiing the judges do not set the criteria for judging.  There is a tribunal of international coaches who set the rules (degree of difficulty, percentages, etc.) and the judges abide by them.

Its always so annoying to watch moguls or acrobatic skiing with parents or friends who never saw a snow park then tell you ''Hey your doing those things when you go ski ?? Like backflips or what ever they do .. back full, back full full...''. Then you have to explain them what the hell is freeskiing, that your not blowing your knee doing moguls or 60 feet high jumps with your both hands over the head and no poles trying to do 3 doubles.

Yeah, i'd like to have freeski in olympics but shurely dont want it to ruin our sport with stupid rules, stupid judging, stupid pipes or stupid jumps. If freeski's going to olympic it have to go in it our way.
