Jellyfish are brutal. They were relentless when I was in the Bahamas, got stung twice. One got me on the arm, I rubbed it on my stomach because I thought I was just itchy then the poison got on my stomach and I realized I got stung. It made my veins pop out a lot, and I had a raised, tentacle shaped mark on my arm for quite a while.

The second one got me behind me knee, walking sucked and I had to sit like than on the plane ride home. These were like 1 inch long with a brown center.

For a 90% water creature they're really annoying.

I hate jellyfish, in terms I'm afraid of them. I hate getting stung by the bastards. Completely fascinated with them though. Especially the iracongi. Something so tiny that's so fucking lethal. And there are some big ass motherfuckers in the ocean, especially the artic.

There was a natgeo or science channel show a few weeks ago on the massive growing population of Nomura's jellys in the sea of japan. It was pretty cool. Nets loaded with these fat bastards.

Fun to see on tv or the aquarium, scary to me at least to sea in the ocean.

Maybe i can track down this one and swim with them. And live on forever. Until the world implodes on 2012

Even if we (humans) had this ability (transdifferentiation), well, I can't even think of how it would work. From my understanding, the jellyfish reverts to a polyp which seems to be the precursor organism for a jellyfish. Wikipedia defines the process as an already differentiated cell changing to a cell outside it's path. Humans seem to complex of an organism for this to work, you can't have nerve cells turning into other stuff, even if they changed to a related cell type like some form of neuroglia. Evolution would have figured a way for it to work (nerve cells wouldn't revert to preserve body function and memory, major body system cells wouldn't undergo the process all at the same time), but you'll always be susceptable to disease, massive trauma and such. You just won't die from getting old. This article says that transdiffertiation occurs in humans, but only on cells of the esophagus: smooth muscle cells change to goblet cells, which I guess are related since the mucous probably lubricates the esophagus or something.

Smart stuff is fun.

I think it will take a long time before they'll be able to apply this to humans cause scientits that work in genetics say that in 200 years of research, they almost didn't make any progress. I read that in a text in my English class, it was pretty interesting. But like they said, they've been trying for 200 years to understand the limbs regeneration of certain animals and they're not even close to apply this to humans so immortality is far from us. I highly doubt that we'll see this in our lifetime but who knows?
