What does a Frat House look like on the inside?

heres how i view frats

when you go to college you can either make friends .. or...

you can buy friends by joining a frat. pretty lame. and since in most frats the "brothers" (haha, so fucking gay) are FORCED to like each other. so that pretty much solidifies your position as being "friends" with like 60 other dudes who you probably dont know very well.

to me..its way more respectable to go out and make friends and meet girls that share common interest with you than to take the easy was by joining a frat and have nasty pussy thrown at you. (btw: getting drunk and partying isnt a common interest..everybody likes those things)

Thank you for not being the typical "frats are all douchebags and gay people" type of person. I'm in a frat and most of the people are fucking awesome. Sure there are bad ones, but they give all frats a bad name.

1.) dude where do you go to school.  that sounds like you guys did work.

2.)  our house has composites hanging on the wall of all our past and current brothers. 

banners with coat of arms and letters. 

we have a bar with letters and a Co2 tap. 

various pledge projects.

awards, such as most improved chapter, best chapter in region, etc, etc, our national charter we received when we became recognized by our national organization.  and soon a local charter from when we just recently became recognized locally by my college. 

not only that but civil war tables, bp tables, a pound table, couches, and all that other shit you can find a any house.

you gotta love the ignorance of some people. you could consider that its "buying" friends, which is an incredibly uneducated way of making an argument by using something out of context.

oh also your statement of "your argument about not liking all of the brother or not knowing them is flawed as well" is flawed itself. i know tons of people in frats at my school and i ask them if they are friends / like everyone in the frat and the unanimous answer is "NO." usually they say, "some of the kids i like, some are OK, and a lot are douche bags." also, the girl posted above in this page that she doesn't like everyone in her sorority either.

i know you HAVE to know the brothers during pledging cause they quiz you and shit...what a great way to make friends. Being quizzed on some older dudes names, learning where they live, and then barely talking to them again. pretty awesome friends. i can only imagine the close relationships that come from that friend making system.

my opinion on frats hasn't changed..its still BUYING friends. its taking the easy way out of the social aspect of college. basically its for insecure people who are too afraid of their own skin to introduce themselves to the social world.

the worst part of being in a frat is telling people back home that you are in one. its like "ohhh..your in a frat? thats pretty lame."

I'm in one. We are all avid skiers, and enjoy the outdoors. More importantly before we join, we usually hang out and are already friends with some of brothers anyway because of mutual interests and hobbies. That being said, yeah a lot of my brothers are my friends, yes a couple of them are huge d-bags, but you cant like everyone, and you don't have to, but like posted above you getting a bid means a majority of the brothers think of you as a friend, and you signing the bid is you returning that response. If your friends thought that a majority of their brothers are d-bags then they made a stupid choice pledging. That doesnt mean you have to be best friends with everyone in the house or that you cant have other friends outside of your fraternity, who usually also share some of the same interests as you. And just as you will probably remain friends with your close non fraternity college friends, you probably will stay good friends with at least some of your brothers for the same reasons. As for the "buying friends", fraternity dues cover a lot of things; Possession and upkeep of a house for a fraternity plus insurance on one is incredibly expensive, plus for being part of anything national usually requires dues or a subscription to cover publication costs and the like and the same goes for fraternities, who publish numerous things throughout the year to keep members updated. As for telling people back home that you're in a fraternity, the only time it really matters is when ignorant people like you hear it. A lot of good comes from being in greek life, one of which is networking. I know for our fraternity that there are over 160,000 alumni brothers who are in the work force, who will vouch for you because they know that you have at least some of the same values that they do (or one of ours is that they know your grades were good), but you are completely right, help getting a job or internship is pretty lame, especially in this economy where there's plenty of great jobs, and getting internships in college is extremely easy as every big company is looking to fill tons of spots. There is a lot more to fraternity life than drinking, big parties, and "buying friends".

By the way, I'm also not hating at all, its just my opinion that you are ignorant.

way to take his words and twist them into something he never even said. You can have your opinions, but they are fucking stupid and make you look like an asshole. Did you not get a bid to a frat you wanted to get into or something?  Just like the real world there are good ones and bad ones, so dont be so quick to judge. I have TONS of really good friends that I made in my fraternity, and I drink for free everynight I'm there, always have a place to crash at, get tons of rides to the mountain, and many other things. Some of these people you may not have been friends with otherwise for various reasons, but once you get to know them you realize they are great people too, not just some frat boi douchebag.

Sure, it cost money, but for my frat its like 100 a semester, which is NOTHING, it barely covers the beer I drink, and helps go to COMMUNAL things, its not like I'm buying friends, that would imply that I'm paying money to be friends with these people, which I''m not. If you get a bid you are a friend regardless of whether or not you accept it. All the money is for is so you can group together funds and do things that you would not be able to do on your own, so really, you get way more out of it than you get into it.

From my experience with frat dudes (aka the people who sit behind me in econ) they are douches who are super loud and like to talk about how awesome they are.

But hey that's just 2 people so I am not going to generalize the only thing I know is they throw some badass parties and seems like a great way to meet knew people/girls and it seems like it something that some people will enjoy and others won't.

To each his own. There are loud and ignorant people in all aspects of a society but don't judge the whole by those few people.

so i read most of the thread and i love the defensive frat brother that these arguments always get into.

come on frattys, how many times have you heard the buying friends line and you don't make it any easier on yourselfs bringing up parties or being the first to talk about how awesome your party room is.

some people, like myself don't are (1) uniformed about what you guys do beyond the sterotype, (2) know and don't like the sterotype, or (3) are interested in other things. I like staying really low and under the radar at school and i hang out with 2 people 95% of the time. I like that. I have other interests outside of school that are so time consuming, even if i wanted to be in a frat, i would have to severely compromise for one of them. I understand that your frat allows you to do things you never would have otherwise. good for you.

but here is the problem; you can't talk about fratenities without having king douche fratty butting in with the elitest tone thats in a couple of posts in this thread.I don't like that.

I used to believe the frat boy stereotype before i went to college. I decided to join one purely for financial reasons, i found out it cost around a thousand less than the dorms. I am extremely glad I made that decision. I have received so much from the house. The people that have very negative views towards fraternities probably have not had much experience with them. I agree that their are bad houses, but there are still many good houses.

^^ fair enough, i still enjoy hanging out with my friends much more than hanging out with my fraternity but at college you get a lot of advantages on stuff, even alone my books makes it worth being in the fraternity; they easily save me 400$/year !
