Is this morally right?

I need other opinions. So me and 3 friends have a apartment off campus. We had a few beers last night and were talking about how bills are due at the end of the week. The way our bills are set up one friend has cable and electric in his name and another has heat in his name. So the one with the heat finally tells us today that pretty much what happens every month is this. He takes what ever the bill is from each of us (usually around 15 bucks each) and offers it to his mom to pay the bill. She says don't worry about it i will take care of it. So he then turns around and uses the money we gave him to pay my other roommate for cable and electric. I found this very fucked up and called him out and almost got in my first fight will a roommate. my 2 other roommates agree with me and I need a general consensus before i refuse to pay for heat for the rest of the year.

You shouldnt expect HIS mother to pay for YOUR share of the heat. So he hasnt done shit wrong!!

I guess that sounds pretty lame, but i mean if he wants to mooch off his mom to have money for the other bills, either he needs it to pay the other bills, or he just wants extra money.

I don't expect HIS mother to pay MY bills. I expect his mother to put MY money to the bills and not give it to HER son to pay for HIS bills. pretty much hes abusing the power of having bills in his name.

Its not about the money its just fucked. What is fucked is his mom doesn't know we give him money every month.. She is under the impression she is being a nice person and paying for cable for the 4 of us collectively.

Well if my friends mom, lets say bought me lunch every week, i would want to pay her back, since she is not accepting the money, it goes to him because its his mom paying for it.

I thought it was the heat. And it doesnt matter whether she pays. Youve paid your share and the bill is covered. Just because it comes out of his mothers account is irrelevant to YOU. It is as equal as his mother giving him that amount of money each month for whatever.

i see a problem. you're all giving him $15 for no reason. You can say you're paying the rent portion, but you really aren't.

tell him to spend the money you give him on what its supposed to go to, or simply start refusing to pay him. This money is going to a specific cause, not just to him to do what he pleases with.

so OPer is to stop paying what he owes simply because someone else's MOM pays the bill for the kid? the bill is still getting paid in this situation, so what is the problem.
how is this different than if the kid actually pays the bill with the cash and, recieves cash from his mom to pay the other bill?

It seems like thats just adding another step to the equation. It sounds like his mom would be giving him an allowance anyways. so whats the difference if:

A)
1You pay him your portion ($15)
2He gives that portion to his mom to pay the utilities
3His mom uses that 15 dollars to pay the utilities
4His mom puts 15 dollars from her account in his account

or
B)
1 You give him 15 dollars
2 He keeps it and his mom pays the bill

either way the bill is being paid, everybody pays there proportional amount and less transfer of money is required to get your room mate money he would have gotten anyways.

i guess in the end it really makes no difference, i just get pissed when people dont use money i give them as intended. i'd rather she give him his spending allowance than me

i do this sometimes with the atm.  like if a friend of mine owes me 20 bucks, ill take it and use it to repay another friend instead of keeping it and getting money elsewhere.  i see it as kind of like this, but not telling the person youre doing it.

well the solution is to obviously get the heat out of his name or stop whining about it the bills r all getting paid by all of your moms in the end probably ur just more pissed at the fact that he did it in front of you if you never saw it happend it wouldnt matter

I agree with you that he made a dick move there. The fact that he pays HIS bills with YOUR money is kinda gay for you but he has totally the right to do it. The worst part in my opinion is that he's actually telling you this story. If he didn't tell you about this, I'm sure you wouldn't have been pissed off. He should have shut the fuck up.

half of you need to get off your high horse and realize that a lot of peoples parents put them through school.  i know mine do, and if my roommates bitched about my dad paying my bills i dont know how id react.  your situation is the exact same as if his parents gave him money to pay your bills, so quit being a little bitch and dont boycott paying heat because if my roommate did that to me, id kick them out

CLIFFNOTES: it seems like there are 4 people living in an apartment and they split the rent somewhat 4 ways (they split it a dumb way) with each roommate having his or her own utility (heat, electricity, water...). 3 of the roommates pay rent without any help from their parents. One roommate gets money from his mom (aka his mom pays his bill), the other roommates (OP) are bitching because their parents don't give them money.

the only thing the one roommate is doing wrong is that he is lying to his mom by saying that he doesnt get money from the other roommates.

i recommend a a) tell his mom, his mom will stop giving him money or not care, things should resume as they were
b) stop paying him, and everyone gets mad.

From how i read it, the kid takes their money for the "heat" to pay his bills, so he really isnt paying his portion of the bills he is just making it look like he is. So he is living there for free off of his friends which is fucked up. Id be pissed too.

next time you see his mom try to tell her indirectly. say i paid my part of the rent in quarters or something like that while shes in the room so it makes it look like an accident.

to be completely honest i think you overreacted. what is the difference between doing what your roommate did and his mom just giving him an allowance? if you owe money for utilities, just pay it and don't worry what the dude is doing with it as long as the bill is paid + he isn't charging you for more than you owe...

just imagine it this way. would you care if she gave him 45 dollars a month or so. just in cash. now imagine the cash you give him is just going towards bills but he tells his mom. so instead of her forwarding him the money she is using your credit and giving him cash
