P-Tex help

I have a deep gash in my skis right on the edge. its deep enough to feel the teeth where the edge bonds to the ski. ive been ptexing it but it comes out after a day of skiing. Why wont it stay?

i let the first drops of ptex drip elsewhere then fill the gash. i let it cool, scrape it even to the base, then wax over it. it doesnt work tho.

any ideas?

make sure it is burning blue not orange, orange means more carbon in it which will not hold as well, i think

try warm up the base first? it needs something else to bond to. that or also try using a bit of epoxy to fill the bottom of the gash to seal it, then you have to give it a rough texture with a knife or really low grit sandpaper so the ptex will bond to it. that should help it all bond better and make your skis last longer

i didnt try epoxy. i will next time. i have tried heating up the base and roughing the surface.

its because its most likely too large or deep for the ptex to hold for long, you sir need a base weld

PTex doesn't hold well on core shots, gouges near edges or bigger gouges. It will even come out of smaller ones sometimes if the ski isn't stone ground after.

So depending of the size of the gouge you could try edge grip (like PTex but with metal adherent), epoxy, a base patch or a base weld. Either way you should probably bring your ski into a shop.

Gashes like yours can be fixed with ptex. However, you have to use a propane torch to rapidly heat the ptex. Then, cool the ptex by immediately compressing a metal scraper over on top of it.

When ptex burns (from a lighter), it creates carbon deposits, which weaken the bond. Torching the ptex rapidly melts it and fewer carbon deposits make for a stronger bond.

i fix all my deep cuts with simple epoxy....

you won't feel a difference while skiing and it works better....

you can just leave the epoxy
or dont fill it up completely and finish off with a ptex layer....

Where do you guys find p tex? No local shops and i'm at wal mart right now and they dont have it. Lowes?
