First Sequence Shot, tips+

Attempted one of these after taking some tips off of an online tutorial.  All that was needed was creating masks for each layer with some touch up work to bring it together.  I did not have a tripod at the time the picture was taken (2008) and this was with a point and shoot.  I don't think it turned out too bad but any help or tips will be well received.

The empty area on the right is bothering me, crop it out next time.

What was gained out of turning this into a sequence shot instead of just having one frame? And don't put riders on a dark background, it is usually very distracting.
