Avalanche Coarses

I want to take an avalanche coarse eventually before next season so i can start skiing out of bounds but i cant find much specific information about it.  I live in Denver and would like to take coarse there if possible but i just thought i would ask on here to see if anyone has any personal experience and what they might recommend.  Thank you

I took Avi one a couple years ago with Alpine World Ascents at berthoud pass

hey...at least he wants to take a course.  Most people skiing loveland pass with their dogs/alone dont even know what a beacon is.  Although spelling it coarse annoyed me too. Ha.

Not sure about the front range, but CMC has a great course in December and another in January every year.  A good deal if you're a resident, $45.

Eldora also has an avy school, which I believe offers another avy 1 class in April. Although Eldora is definitely not the most badass mountain, their pro patrolers who teach the class are very knowledgeable and awesome.

Also, I don't know how much you know so far, but places like REI and Neptune mountaineering offer short 1 hour classes about once a month that are free and relatively informative.

id recommend taking one through either loveland or brian mountain nordic ski patrol, the seem to be the best around the front range. and sometimes do their classes together. and dont take it thought cmc (colorado mountain club) they're idiots

Colorado Mountain School in Estes Park is definitely the best on the Front Range. Most guides/instructors are IFMGA certified, or very close too. Alpine World Ascents is too, but pretty pricey.

It's late in the season now though for courses, but there is usually a ton in the Fall. Friends of Berthoud Pass give free avy awareness classes in Denver during October and have an on-snow session in January. Great guys, free service, perfect if you can't afford a Level 1 class. http://berthoudpass.org/

You go to DU Dane, you could do it through the Alpine Club in January(?) and do it with friends.

^^^Nick, I know like 5 people on this site. I'm only here to laugh at how people start threads for ditching CSAP to go skiing (which I totally used to do) and how people at DU apparently don't know how to spell course.

But hopefully the Alpine Club runs a Level 1 course through CMS next year, so if you, "Dane," go to DU, you can go for like half off or something like that. I won't have any influence over whether it actually happens, I'm officially no longer an actual officer as of Monday-ish.
