Purchasing My First Camera

Hey guys. I'm sure most of you don't want to see another "what kind of camera should I get" thread, but I don't feel like search barring for a thread is going to meet my needs. It'd be hard to find a thread that specifically is going to fit my needs.
So anyways, I want to buy my first DSLR Camera. I've taken many pictures, that my friends consider to be outstanding, but with a Point-And-Shoot. So I want to step it up a notch and get something of quality.
My main areas of interest for photography are nature/landscapes, and skiing of course.
I guess another question is; what's wrong with Fujifilm, Pentax, Sony, or Olympus? It seems to me like Canon and Nikon are the ways to go, but why?
My price range is anything under 650$. I don't want to spend a whole lot of money on my first camera. And yes, I do know that extra lenses and what not are going to cost a pretty penny as well.
And basically, what are some tips you'd like to give to a new photographer?
Thank you very much!!

im afraid your topics have all been covered in previous threads. you may want to search around in DSLR threads, they will have all your answers. you're no matter what just going to be told to get a rebel or a d40, that lenses are important and you need to learn a whole lot to be good
this thread was kind of unneccessary, but good luck all the same.

The guy above me is right, but i'll help you out anyways. I just got my first DSLR. Im no beginner what so ever but i never had the money to have my own. So i was on a VERY tight budget of $500 I looked at used cameras and that helped ALOT. It deffenetly keeps the price down. So I ended up getting a nikon d60 with the 18-55 non vr lens (because im on a budget and dont need the vr)
And it's been treating me GREAT. Everybodys been loving my pictures, and they've been stoking me up. So the moral of my story is, look at used cameras like the nikon d40 or d60 and the 18-55 is an excellent lens to start off with. Sure it's not like any thousand dollar lens but it's better quality then a point and shoot.

if you are willing to spend a little bit more than 650, I would HIGHLY suggest the Canon rebel t2i. Amazing quality HD footage that mirrors the Canon 7D and its only 900 with an 18-55mm kit lens. As soon as I sell off my DVC30 I am picking one up
