Filming Ideas

Im considering investing in some entry level filming equipment, just to shoot on the hill and anything interesting that I see.
My brother (graphics design/webpage designer) wants me to send him footage so he can edit, and possibly sell.

Me film
He edit
We profit (somehow)

The editing's fine, but you need to stand out somehow, and that doesnt really stand out to me.

Yeah try to do something that people have never seen or something that is really funny.

I like edits like the one with nick and shea at loveland, with a sketchy set-up they made something really cool in my opinion.

i won't lie because i think honesty can be helpful to you, but i found that to be over- edited a bit. but i see where you're coming from
you should be fine with an consumer-prosumer level HD minidv camcorder im sure

if you head over to media and arts on the forums tab youll find a great "what camera to buy" forum stickied (by horner i believe) and if you search around im sure youll find more threads of people looking for the same thing as you

I do agree, it's over edited. Its actually a quick sample of a film he made for school, he wanted it to be really attention getting.

Im not worried about finding equipment, he can help me do that.

Im trying to figure out how to sell films.
Ex: offer to shoot/edit random dudes and give them a card? shoot events and hand out cards? sell dvds? etc

to be honest the editing really isn't all the that impressive, people put out edits just like that everyday here on ns. Get to the level of filming and editing that people like Alex Horner, Will Start, or Trent Palmer are at then companies may start to hire you to help promote their products. But from the looks of it you have a long ways to go before you get there. I'm not saying you can't get there, it's just going to take a lot of work. Your best bet to make money off of filming is to look somewhere outside of skiing.

hmmm no offense, but the editing there is really basic and truly its over edited
just put down a basic edit without so many wacky transitions and stuff.

Hey this is his brother. That was my first ski edit, and It was also my first time using Sony Vegas, so i appreciate your suggestions. I plan on spending more time on this site and watching ski films to get a better feel of the ski film style :)

Yea to be honest, that filming and editing was pretty bad. I stopped about half way cause I couldn't bare it. It's going to be pretty far out there to make money off filming ski edits. A lot of these kids just film cause it's a passion of theirs.

no.


It used a song from EDIAS.
the "on beat cuts" were no exactly on beat
no amount of editing could salvage some of the shake in those shots
color correction was non existent but sorely needed.
and so on......

Guys, filming and editing is alot of fun, I like it alot. However, don't get into making edits to try to get rich or make money, because that won't happen.
