Toe slop with my Griffons

My Marker Griffons, which have served me well for the past year or so up until this point, have developed some play in the toe piece. Not a ton but definitely noticeable and it drives me crazy to have my skies clunking around on my feet. My boots (Dalbello Rampages) are damn near brand new with some wear on the toes but certainly not enough to warrant the  amount of slop there is. I have checked the screws that hold the binding on my skies and they're all good and tght so I don't think that's it, it might be my forward presure but I haven't messed with that and I don't think it would back out on it's own and especially since it happened the same amount on both skies. Aside for that I have no idea what it could be. So I have come to the internet in hopes of finding an answer for why my boots are flopping around in my bindings. So please NS, help me out.

raise the toe height. i have full tilts and had to max out toe height on all my royalty bindings.

umm...only barons and dukes have toe heights

This is a very common problem on Jesters and Griffons...especially with Dalbello and Full Tilt, there isn't much you can do except live with it and try to adjust your forward pressure as much as you can, which is one reason why they aren't very good

you came to the internet but you should have gone to a ski shop thats the best advice i can give you. hard to tell what the problem is from way over here. it'll save you time and frustration. good luck with your bindings man.

NO, not at all.

And dont adjust the forward pressure unless you know what you are doing, if its too tight, your din wont help and you will have a difficult time releasing when you are supposed too, leading to torn ligaments or heal piece rip outs. Take them to the shop they will be able to fix it up

I did take them to the shop in town here but they had no idea if there even was a toe height adjustment on them or not. But they did say they'd call marker for me in the morning so I'll see what they have to say about it. Thanks for the quality answers.

123ski. out of curiosity do you think that a Tecnica, Nordica, Lange, or Salomon boots would fit nice and tight or is it something broken in the binding?

yes.

The dalbello boot has a thinner outsole than other brands, it works well with the Duke/Baron because of the toe height adjustment, but it just doesn't work with those boots.

Boots are your #1 most important piece of gear.  Don't sell your boots in order to keep using those bindings, sell those bindings instead.

pretty sure every single boot sole is the same, there all to DIN standard. thats why you can take any boot and put it into any binding and adjust it according to a standardized chart. the only time this varies is with touring boots...?

It was a change Marker made for the 09/10 season- all of the new Royal family bindings have new toe wings that accommodate Dalbello and Full Tilt toe heights.  Marker sells new toe wings to retrofit your binding.  That is your solution, much cheaper than buying a new FKS binding.  Go to your local shop have them call Marker, they are aware of this.

You shouldn't have top buy a new toe wing because the engineers didnt test all the boot shapes and didnt take this into consideration.

I have two pair of Griffons new this year. One pair dont squeak at all & the other pair do at times with my Dabello boots. They have little slop though which is what I care about & have not had a pre-release yet.

The shop called marker and they want me to send in my bindings to check them out but i'm going on a trip on the 20th and i have no faith that marker will be able to have something back to me in 2 weeks.

Do you know if these replacement wings are something i could buy alone? or are they installed by marker?

I assume that by wings you're talking about the two grey pieces on the outer edges of the toes piece. I don't see how they could be replaced without special tools that I don't have.

o what would you guys say the best option for bindings with full tilts would be? im experiencing toe slop in my rossi sas 100's and just bought ep pros and bebating on what binding to buy.. help me out

I just got pivot 14s for my bibbys and they make my griffons feel like plastic toys. definitely worth the money. go for pivots or fks

Yes there is a DIN/ISO standard for boots and bindings. But it allows some room for movement. The standard is something like 23-25 mm (I guessed these numbers and they are only for example).

The problem was that Jesters/Griffons had a 25 mm toe height (again the number is an example) whereas Dalbellos and Full Tilts had a 23 mm (for example!) thick toe piece. They are both within the standard range but this is why there was some slop. It is, however, fixed in this season's (09-10) bindings. I have two pairs of Jesters (09/10) with Dalbello boots, no problems whatsoever.

holy fuck and i thought I just sucked at skiing sometimes.

I get some dangerous unwarranted toe slop just every once in a great while.

maybe once out of every 5-6 hours skiing and i use griffons / jesters and ride dalbello boots. toe slop is the only way i've heard it described...that makes sense

time to get some FKS bindings and try them out

correct, you shouldn't have any toe slop with your 09/10 Griffons and Booters if the binding was properly setup and adjusted

No. aside from what i've already talked about. They've been great.

I just got new skis and instead of getting another pair or griffons I got pivots. I still have the griffons on my blends and i don't intend to get rid of them because of the slop i just wondered whether there was something i could do to stop it.

quick fix for you would be to go to the shop and find out if they have any old afd's kicking around for rossi bindings, they will most likely have some for the junior models because most of them come with extra afd adapters for junior/senior boot norms. Get 2 of the afd's. you will then want to take some epoxy and glue the extra afd's on top of your current metal afd of the marker, this will give you a few extra mm's to get rid of the slop. the shop will not do the epoxy job for you i'm quite sure since its a liability thing, i have done it for a few buddies with jesters and delbelos, only use appropriate afd materal for this since you stil want a smooth release.
i know this is not ideal, but it works well.
