mitosis=normal cell division, has several stages that wikipedia can tell you about.

Meiosis=gamete division, if I remember correctly, doesn't duplicate chromosomes and so is haploid. Mitosis yields a diploid cell with all the chromosomes.

i use IPMAT to remember the order.
meiosis and mitosis are the same except meiosis is used to gamma cells or whatever. if you wanna reproduce, a species must be able to use meiosis.

Seriously?  A further explanation than google?  I have taken multiple collegiate biology and biochemistry classes, and some of the stuff that google pulls up is still way above my head.  You will get a better summary there than anywhere else.  You just have to know how to look and not be lazy.

If you see diagrams, meiosis is the one that has crossing over, where the chromosomes from the mom and dad exchange parts so there is variety in our species (most species).

Mitosis vs Meiosis

Mi-two-sis Mei-one-sis
Produces body cells(Somatic cells)

Produces sex cells(Gametes)
Daughter cells diploid(2N)

Daughter cells haploid(N)
Two daughter cells produced

Four daughter cells produced
In metaphase chromosomes line up singley


In metaphase I chromosomes line up as homologous pairs(synapsis)
The two double chromosomes are called a tetrad when they are lined up side-by-side.
Crossing over occurs during the formation of the tetrad
One nuclear division

Two nuclear divisions
Produces cells for growth and repair

Produces cells for sexual reproduction
Daughter cells have two sets of chromosomes(pairs)

Daughter cells have only one member of each pair of chromosomes
Daughter cells are genetically identical to the parent cell

Daughter cells have one-half of the genes from the parent cell
Insures that all daughter cells are genetically identical

Generates genetic diversity through crossing over and ramdom seperation of homologous pairs of chromosomes

hope that helps this shit helped me the night before my test and literally scored 100 % (with ex) haha but still
