Want to Start Editing/Filming

Hey NS,

I'm new to the media and arts forum, but I would like to start to edit and film. After a very painful progression season Im starting to realize that its going to be extremely hard for me to get good at park skiing. Well put it this way, If I skied as good as I looked while skiing, I would be pro /claim. Besides that, my friends are pretty good, and If i could learn me some filming and editing skills, we could contribute some pretty dopesauce edits. So yeah, I obviously need a camera, a tripod, some editing software and advice.

Honestly, you're probably gonna need a litte more money. You could pick up a panasonic gs320 or gs500 and a shitty tripod and a shity wide angle for about 500 bucks.

Alright would you guys know anything about using a GoPro for still shots? Or does that totally defeat the whole purpose of a GoPro?

you mean still like photos, or still like not pov?
scope the USC ski team edits, they use gopro's, and its not all pov

gopro all the way. if thats all the money you can get . do the gopro , dont get any of the adapters either. use frickin duct tape. such a waste.

naa absolutley not pov. i think pov suks . most of the time. duct tape it to a ski pole or some sort of stick to steady it and do follow cams and shit . you could even rig a simple cable cam with it. it connects to a tripod, do a dolloy with it. go on vimeo and search kevin steen, hes on here too . he uses one alot! plus hes got some sik edits

Alright thanks for all the help so far, I think im feeling the HD Hero. What about Software? Preferably free for windows XP

In my opinion the GoPro is an incredible camcorder for the money.

1. The quality is very impressive for a camera that one can fit in their pocket.
2. its mountable (and not just helmet and pov mounts, the pole mount is an awesome tool).
3. Where else can you find 1080 60p for under $1000?
4. ITS ONLY $299!!!!!

Seriously, maybe you should just get two GoPros. then you can film yourself filming :)

adobe suite! after effects, preimiere pro, adobe photoshop. all free torrent em. if youdont know how google heavily. plus the key gen is a bit tricky sometimes. And once you get software installed do not be online otherwise it might try and update and then itll boot ya. I guess it also depends on how big your comp is. might just go with vegas or someting.

ehh, i think go pro footage just looks odd with lighting changes and movement. id go for a cheap hv30 and a tripod. i love my manfrotto, but its pricey.

I mean yes the GoPro does sound like an incredible deal.

Does anybody know anything about Windows Movie Maker? My freshman year of High School we got some background  on it.

i wouldnt drop that kinda money if you have never filmed or edited before. get a 200 cam of craigslist, 30 tripod from best buy and torrent some editing software

Windows movie maker doesn't allow you to learn and do as many things as you can with programs like Adobe Premeire and Sony Vegas.... Dowload the trials from the companies website and try and find a keygen this way you can learn and pick up editing/ filming

I was in the same budget range as you, I had $700 Canadian to spend on a camera. I would go a used hv30, hv20. I got my hv30 for $500 then got an opteka fisheye for $150 and a shitty tripod and I was set. Go for what you think fits you best ,but make sure your computer can handle HD footage because their is nothing worse then buying an HD camera and not being able to edit your footage.

The more and more I think about it, dropping 650 dollars on something I'm not sure that I'm going to enjoy is pretty stupid.

idk if this helps but i just emailed them asking about the screen attachment. When they get back to me do you want me to ask them about the backpack too? Or is my sarcasm meter needy of attention?

whoa whoa, it shoots 1080p30p and 720p60p. No camera right now (at least legit, under $5000 camera) shoots TRUE 1080p60p.
