CR johnson, squaw valley question?

I wanted to take a run for CR to celebrate his life. Where is light towers at sqauw? i cant seem to find it on the mountain map? Or is it just something not named and people just like to call it by light towers?

What lift is it off of and how do i get there?

im not too sure if its a good idea to commemorate a pro skier by skiing the same (probably gnarly) run, that he died skiing.




besides, i think ski patrol blew it up.

Wouldn't recommend attempting this line unless you have a lot of experience making high speed turns. But good luck man, CR inspires me a lot as well. This is Mattias Sullivan from UnofficialSquaw.com ripping Light Towers. This kid rips hard core. Cheers

nope the easiest way to get to it is off cornice II or headwall if i'm not mistaken

it's below the top of headwall and above the top of cornice II. best bet is to take the headwall lift and follow the ridgeline skiers right. but yea it's a gnarly run so i wouldn't attempt it unless the snow is good and you are real confident in your abilities. I mean, it did get the best of a pro skier who knew what he was doing...it's no joke. in my opinion, leave it alone.

In that vid, at the very beginning you can look down and see a small spine above the cliff that makes the skier's left border of the narrowest part of the choke of the chute.  CR was skiing a line above that cliff and started tumbling.  That spine arcs right and sent CR airing across and over the chute, and he impacted rocks at the base of the cliff making the right border of the chute.

It is lookers right of the cornice chairlift.  Take a look at epicski.com for the thread on this, and they have a picture of where Lighttowers is.

it's very very exposed right now. i wouldn't recommend the skiers right chute, that's just straight up sketchy. maybe pick your way down skiers left but it's steep and rocky. don't do it unless you're a really competent skier and you know what you're doing

chances are they close it also

i dont wanna sound like i am the bomb, but the line as it is in the video is not that badass. maybe the cam is stretching it and makes it seem less steep.

but i am sure i could hit that and a lot of people on here too. this doesnt mean that CR was bad as he wasnt skiing the same route. i guess he skied tons of runs that were much more dangerous....

so sad




its like mark twain said (from the german translation i heard back to english) "the best swordsman in the world never fears the secondbest swordsman. he fears some guy that never had a sword in his hand"

so this eeny-weeny line (by pro standards) killed one of our best skiers...

I am not trying to be a dick here. Let's see what you're skiing dude. That's a 45-50 degree pitch with a rocky entry, high speed through a tiny as shoot with lots of exposures.

this line may not seem that sketchy, but I can assure you that looking down it is pretty scary. Not only is it steep and tight, but the little chocolate chips that are in the choke and the fact that the out-run is literally a series of traverses chopped across the face makes it pretty fuckin gnar, notice how those skis bounce on the way out. I dont think alot of people on here could straightline that chute.

Keep in mind that it is steep as shit.  I've hit when it was more filled in and it seemed super sketch.  And CR wasn't riding the chute, he was hitting it in a more gnarly, rocky spot.  Don't tell me you've never gone over the handlebars hitting unexpected rocks.  Its just lucky that most people don't do it over a large cliff.

yeah, youre right, its not easy and i cant really say what i would say when i stand on top of it, but from the video perepective, its actually one small drop into a slight, 100 ft long right turn and at 0:07 in the video you can start to control the speed again.

so again, its not an easy line and i dont know what i would say after looking down from up there, but imo its not as tough as all these guys in this thread act like. and dont forget that the conditions didnt seem too good in this vid.

and just to say it, i live in the alps, i actually hit some lines every now and then, its not like i cant estimate shit.

and the main message was my sadness over this small line ending such a great life

And you're right. For a pro to pass away on a short risk/reward line is mind boggling, when in comparison to all the huge things he had done in his past.
