What about at meadows or skibowl? is there good access to the canyons?

um dont try, there is no easy access to anything right now, not enough snow, plus dropping the backside of skibowl backcountry and the sides of timby you can easily get lost if you dont know the area well enough

I wuz just playin, there's some really great stuff to ski OB at T-Line. However, it's imperative that you DON'T go out there unless 1) you're riding with someone who knows where they're going, 2) you have avalanche training and 3) you've been paying attention to conditions and you know WHEN to go.

Leaving the boundaries at T-Line is no joke. There are gnarly cornices and avy-prone pitches, and it's not hard to take a wrong turn and end up seriously lost. Know before you go.

When avi conditions are safe, go out past otto lang on the mile and just ski that closest canyon down to the parking lot... fun stuff .... couple fun rocks to jump off.... do it with someone that has done it before.

yes salmon river canyon is Pretty sick. more fun if you start by palmer.. but yes. you can get quite lost..

one of the dumbest things I've done. head out in high avy danger but skiing a different slope that wasnt wind loaded and not getting sun (thought we would be safe) . That being said we were skinning up a loaded slope and you can see a wind loaded ridge that didnt exist after the slide. we got hit with a mostly wet slide, however, higher up the canyon we wouldnt had been able to out run it. it buried about 20-30' deep in a terrain trap.

This was april of last year.

White River is fun though and has some really steep stuff

Good pics! That sums it up. looks really fun with no consequences, but it can change your day real quick. This is a pretty small avi, we have seen these same slopes unload to dirt in years past. That's a crown of 10+ feet, debri paths that go for miles, much like the one at meadows. If you think about it White river, Salmon river and Zig Zag canyons are almost identical to heather canyon in aspect, slope angle and exposure. That's the tricky thing about northwest avi forcasting. It's ussually not a high risk, but when it goes it can unload huge. This is especially important this year where our snowpack is higlhly fractued or seperated by long periods of dry weather, rain and high wind events. Makes for a bad situation in the BC. Look for bad things to happen as it warms up this spring.

More hikers need to know this.......Those hikers that you see getting lost on the news usually get ready right by my locker. I have heard them talk of how they are going to summit the mountain by morning. After hearing this I will go home, check the weather, what do you know! Snow storm coming over night.....next day see those guys being rescued on the mountain....but a lot aren't rescued.....I wish hikers knew more about how harsh the weather get up there.

Amen. That slide in Heather Canyon last month could have swallowed 20 schoolbuses whole.

yeah..  when it comes down to it.. people think since hood is all alone and is technicaly surrounded and is not in a bum fuck egypt setting. that you cannot get lost or if you get lost you will be fine. but the truth is weather at hood if its not a clear fuckin day. once you see clouds forming a cap on the peak all bets are off. people have a tendacy to pack their gear but not ther common sense. ive hiked to the summit once.... and did so in goddam ski boots.. i made it  looking back . top 3 dumbset things ive ever done.  no crampons no shovel  no over night gear.. just what i had on my back a big water bottel and two lifties to go along with me..    remember the mtn has been there longer than any of us. and it will be there after we die.  so the mtn does not realy care about your little life..  if you have the tranining and the experainced people it can be safe and fun.

the best way is to take a avy course www.mountainsaavy.com
next get a pack together containing:
-shovel
-probes
-M.I.A Kit
-Whistle
-Duct Tape
-Space BLanket
-First Aid Kit
-Food/Water
-Sunglases
-Sun screen

Other equipment to have:
-Beacon
-Spot
-Ava-lung

Secondly the best way is to meet people who go out into the backcountry who would be willing to take you out there. taking a course would be on such way of meeting people.

PM me. I go up there quite a bit and know the white river area pretty well. There is a lot of fun to be had out there and even in moderate avy conditions there is a lot of small things you can screw around on if you're not in a terrain trap
