CR Johnson has Passed Away

I just got a text message. Apparently CR hit his head on a rock while skiing Headwall (Squaw) this morning and has passed away. I will keep this thread updated with details as I get them.

I remember back in the day CR was so far ahead of his time. Guy was boosting huge in the pipe and also in the BC. I forget which MSP movie it was but CR did this bio 10 first hit and it just blew my mind.

Guy was a pioneer, and one of the best skiers in his time. Sucks about the luck he had after his head injury and with his sponsors.

The guy really inspired me, and as a result I feel like I know him. At least he died doing something he loved, but he was far too young.

I'll never forget the first time I saw C.R. ski. I was in 7th or 8th grade and it was lunch time. My friend, a snowboarder, brought in TB9 or TB10 to watch during lunch (I don't remember which, I think 9). We watched the whole movie and got to the credits. Sure enough there's a skier blasting 1260's and 1440's, I think there was like 3 shots. I was confused, a skier in a snowboard movie? Then I started thinking..."holy shit that guy did 4 spins!". It was crazy and awesome to see a skier throwing down in a snowboard movie like that, especially since it was the heyday of snowboarder's hating skiers.

I got to meet C.R. last year when I was out at Hood for West Coast Session. PBP was shooting at Ski Bowl for EDIAS and I was chilling with Moxham and Walker at Scummits showing them some recent shots from Keystone that we had gotten, "Stoney Leftovers" had just dropped but they hadn't seen it yet.

I was playing the edit for them and C.R. walked in, I immediately had to stop the edit, I did my best to play it cool and introduce myself because he is someone that I have looked up to for a while. He asked us what we were up to and I told him we were checking out some of our recent footage from Keystone. He pulled up a chair and joined us as we re-started the edit so he could check it.

I was nervous but excited to show him my work. He was so stoked to see what those guys were doing and complemented me on my shots and how it was put together. It was such a cool experience and will stick with me for a long time. A later that day we got to see C.R. crushing that massive Ski Bowl jump like it was 2003-2004. C.R. eased in with some 3's and 7's. The next day we all got to see C.R. lay down his trademark bio 900 opp mute with ease. It was like he had never been phased by his accident and was just getting back to work. It was so cool to see him after he did the first one, he had this huge shit eating grin on his face, explaining to us how he hadn't thrown that trick since before his accident. He worked the trick for the rest of the day getting it perfect, the way he used to. He was so damn stoked, I'll never forget it.

It is sad to say, another one bites the dust. Unfortunately, his name was CR Johnson.

I remeber the first time seeing him was during the world premire of EDIAS, His, john spriggs and thalls part came up and cali P and Cookie custom song started playing. CR was sitting on the ground in front of us with his fist up stoked out of his mind like it was his first seggy. Such a solid person and skier.

Anybody know if CR had an NS Profile?  I'd like to have him as a friend on NS.  Hoping it will remind me that "Change is the only constant in life". And that when I get that feeling of "why me"; I just need to shut up and ski.

I have the same strong memory of watching CR in the credits of that snowboard film. I can remember it clearly, standing in the snowboard section of sporting life, watching the tv, looking like a boarder in what was definitely enemy territory at the time. Then seeing those shots of CR in the credits and i still get the same feeling of pride now, surrounded by a huge snowboard sales area, I wanted to yell out hey thats me im a skier!  CR did so many inspirational things, but those first big tricks really put a big shot of energy into skiers back then, i can still feel the stoke just thinking about it.

I've got a Canon T1i and a bunch of lenses. I wanted to set up and shoot some of the freeride competition anyway so I'll have it with me. It shoots HD video so we'll at least get a tribute and post it up here. Sean - bring your go pro if you have it too.

the skiing community truly just lost a pioneer, and a hero. CR always seemed invincible after all he'd been through. This is horrible. RIP. He had so much living left to do :(

Jah bless..RIP CR. We are all fighting a fight that we are winning. One day we will lose, and CR lost too early for his time. Didn't really know him but definitewly impacted skiing in a remarkable way.

To the OP/dingosean, please do something like that in honor of him and please document it.

This. I mentioned it in another thread but I saw this maybe 15 years ago (I thought it was an earlier TB movie) I had just started to learn to snowboard and after seeing CRJ I went back to skis. Only recently getting back into skiing I found out about his accident and was super stoked to hear him coming back. So sad. Never be scared to let your tears fall..
