DSLR vs. SLR

definitely worth investing in a DSLR, especially now that they have integrated HD video too, you can kill two birds with one stone.

if you have a dark room and enlarger and all that stuff, id say stick with the slr for a little while and work on your skills.  developing photos is really really fun because you can tweak them in so many ways during the printing process.  dslr is the way to go eventually, but you can have tons of fun, and gain experience, with a slr

I actually have that exact camera, used it for about 2 years then got a Nikon d40x (the new d60 just old name) and it was completely worth it, it's worth dishin out the money if you plan on shooting a lot.

I used to use an old nikon SLR and was able to develop and enlarge for prints at my highschool dark room. It was fun as shit. As said above if you have access to a darkroom stick with the SLR for a while to get a good appreciation for photography.

i used an slr throughout highschool, it was super fun and is definetly a good thing to know how to use. especially darkroom stuff.

but using a darkroom can be pretty expensive, a dslr is a one time investment (unless you upgrade).

has anyone set up a dark room? because i have one at my school that i could use but im graduating this year. i have a room in my basement that would work for one m just wondering the price of it all. i feel like having a dark room and that whole process sounds fun

Honestly that I wouldn't bother making a home darkroom unless you are serious about pursuing film photography. The major thing is it gets expensive. An enlarger alone is pretty expensive and then you have to buy chemicals every so often and photo paper. I love the darkroom and I wish I could use it more often. But the only thing stopping me is the cost. Film adds up pretty quick if you get decent film. And since you are graduating and if you are going to college I'm sure they should have a darkroom available if you are taking a photo class. If not I'd say digital is the way to go.

Oh and if you really want to stick to film, buy some mixing tanks and chemicals. Then buy a photo slide scanner for around $150. Develop them in a dark room and then scan the negatives onto the computer. But again it adds up pretty quickly.

If you have the resources at your disposal I'd recommend starting with film. To me it's a more natural way to understand exposure, light metering, and printing. It gives you a tangible process through which you can understand how a photo is created, rather than digital files which can easily be reviewed, erased, and edited. Working with film forces a beginner photographer not to be lazy with composition and exposure because you're not getting an instant readout on the back of your camera. The carelessness inherent in starting with DSLR is, to me, the biggest problem with most amateur photographers. So I definitely recommend starting with the SLR if you can before you go willy nilly in the instant world of digital photography. That said, it will be a lot of work if you don't have darkroom access but, depending, on where you are, it can be sleuthed out. Talk to highschools and colleges, because lots of them have darkroom access available through photo workshops and the like.
