Girl died at my college today

Andrea Robinson passed away this afternoon. Crazy shit, she was a freshman at Ohio University, got Bacterial Meningitis over the weekend, checked into the university hospital on Monday 2/15, and now she's gone. I didn't know her personally, but it is definitely eye-opening to see that people our age can be gone that quickly.

RIP.

Meningitis is a scary disease.  It's something that everyone should know the symptoms of and if you feel like you have them at all go to the hospital!  Getting a spinal tap is way better than the alternative, especially when it can kill you in 48 hours or less.

some girl has that in a dorm near mine...I think i'm going to avoid that dorm for a bit. I didn't know that it was that serious.

It really sucks that the symptoms are so similar to the flu that you can't hardly tell.

"In persons over age 2, common symptoms are high fever, headache, and stiff neck. These symptoms can develop over several hours, or they may take 1 to 2 days. Other symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, confusion, and sleepiness."

The biggest indicator is the stiff neck.  If you don't feel good and your neck is incredibly stiff and painful, get checked out.  Your neck can be so painful you can't even tilt your head forwards.  The flu has muscle soreness, but the stiff neck is key.

It's weird that this condition is getting so much media lately. I don't know if it's becoming more popular or what. But 2 people in Madison, WI died from in the last couple weeks. A U of Wisconsin girl, and a HS kid from Mount Horeb (just outside of Madison)

friend got that shit. in two days he was in the hospital, was partially paralyzed for over a month and had to drop outta college for the year. shit comes out of the blue and is so deadly.

Shit, you guys think it's probably just "oh shit, I've got a stiff neck", but you're completely wrong. There's a difference between stiff neck and Meningitis neck. Meningitis neck is like, "Oh shit, this is incredibly painful, and it feels like there's a steel rod where my spine should be" stiff neck.

If you feel that shit, you def. know the difference, and that sucks for her, but it's her fault for not going to the hospital sooner. You're supposed to go within 6 hours of feeling that shit.

did you know that at least 10 percent of young adults and 30 percent of teenagers carry the meningitis bacteria harmlessly in their throat?  however in 1 in 100,000 the bacteria gets into your blood stream and thats when you get sick.  very bad luck indeed.

i lost two friends to that. but now im kinda scared because ive gotten that "stiff neck" a few times... maybe it was just from sleeping on it wrong or something. maybe ill go get the vaccine.

Yeah i have no idea the statistics of getting it, or how deadly it can be. All i know is that i'm paranoid as shit about drinking after people and getting stiff necks now.
