Nothing against the atheltes, but I agree with the reasoning and to be leery of what FIS will do when they get their hands on skiing halfpipe. discuss

aerials really is gymnastics on skis....i knew a girl from australia who was training to be on the olympic aerials team that came up to snowbasin just to learn how to ski so she could do aerials

just to play devil's advocate...

so what if FIS gets its hands on anything?  let them regulate.  really, its up to the athletes to innovate.  as the article said, johnny Mo breathed life back into moguls (though it was short lived...)

the point is, slope and street rails are hot because creative non-conformist skiers are changing the sport daily.  the freshness of newschool skiing is a direct result of THAT, not the absence of a FIS presence.

Those of you that think competition Freeskiing is not currently structured and conformed are smoking some crazy ass shit.

Competition freeskiing is NO different than moguls, and aerials; as is any judged sport.

i had no idea aerialists couldnt/didnt actually ski, for serious, not even for fun. whats the point of even doing that shit then? its like gymnastics where you go to school for it and train all day till its not even fun anymore.

well lets just look at snowboarding half pipe. its been in the olympics for a couple years and it seems to be doing fine.

but there is always the whole commercialization vs core to consider.

same with mogul skiers
they're not all senseless jocks

i think adding big air or halfpipe will only add negatively to freesking
there's not a chance the judging would suit the tastes of common freeskiers, it would be too rigid, style wouldnt matter. what we might see as awesome they see as just 2 less spins than the other guy

the article's argument about sheer numbers of rotations is completely invalid.

back full = 1 backflip rotation, 1 spinning rotation (lateral)

Cork 7/Switch misty 7= 1 cork/flip rotation, 1 spinning rotation

Jeret Peterson's hurricane is three flips with five spinning rotations. in actuality, bobby's trick is two flips with two spinning rotations, and TJ's is essentially two flips with two and a half spinning rotations.

the whole article has some validity, but the whole segment on how park skiing's degree of difficulty has caught up in terms of numbers of spins and flips is completely incorrect.


also, have you ever seen Dylan Ferguson ski?

i just wrote this over on the powder site and am too lazy to write it again...copy and paste at its finest...

a lot of people from the salt lake area can completely refute this argument by using one person as an example. dylan ferguson. he's the man. perhaps a reason you havent heard of any aerial skiers out on our "scene" is because they have been training their hearts out to be a part of these olympic games. a few parts in this post was a bit of a slap in the face towards fellow skiers, why cause that rift in the sport? were all still enjoying the outdoors with the same essence at heart. further, what do you say about park freestyle teams going to places such as the uop and lake placed waterramps and going off of the exact same jumps... in those outfits the last thing a person would think is that they are "skiing"

**after i wrote that i also realized that his most recent example of an aerial skier dates back to the first superpark...dont mean to date some of the guys on this one...but that has been one hell of a long time ago. just with park skiing in general things have grown so much more.

ITS A GOOD ARGUMENT, BUT ALL IT DOES IS TALK SHIT AND FOCUS ON THE NEGATIVES OF OUR OPPONENTS. HALFPIPE AND BIG AIR ARE LIMITLESS AND THE ARTICLE SHOULD FOCUS MORE ON THE GREATNESS OF OUR KIND OF SKIING. OK there a few issues with all of this. I believe Will Wesson stated skiing is anything i do with skis on my feet. I couldidnt agree more. Who are we to judge what skiing is and is not? How many times do the freeski crowd get shit for hitting rails? I am sure people expect that most of the freeskiers aren't "good skiers". What is the measure of a good skier or a real skier? There are so many aspects of the sport we should just enjoy them all there is no reason to hate on a certain aspect. A good friend of mine is in Vancouver competing in aerials and whenever you ask him about jumping he just goes man hitting that triple is the most fun thing in the world. Its not about traning, hard work or compition he does it because he loves the sport thru and thru. Who are we to judge what skiing is and is not? Here is an excerpt from our film last year with him in it.

I disagree, It's cool that your aerial buddies ski park and stuff but aerials is truly gymnastics on skis.
Since when do skiers wear those baseball sunglasses under a helmet and roll into jumps with their arms strait up in the air. uhhh...... they don't

I used to really care about things like this, but skiing has changed so much in the past decade that I think it's useless for more than a dozen of the super-influential skiers to worry about where our sport is going to be ten years in the future. As long as I can have fun and scare myself hitting jumps, rails, cliffs and get some cheers from the chairlift, and watch some crazy stuff in ski movies, I'll be happy with skiing.

They are ALL good for the sport. It's exposure and opportunities for people who love to do things with skis strapped to their feet, whether it be banging bumps, running a pipe, sliding rails or hitting an aerial jump.

Honestly, I read the criticism and felt it was a shitty criticism and quite invalid actually.

Aerials is dead. they dont use poles. there on 150's, they look like fucking dick heads, they wear sunglasses. They think pencil spins and straight knees is cool. Nobody fucking does it. you cant even go hit one of those jumps unless your on a team in like fucking calgary or lake placid or some bullshit. the chinese are one of the best teams which proves even more that you dont even need to ski to be good at it.. fuck that bullshit, grab your damn skis and carve mother fuckers ahahah.
the only ill aerial skiers are like matt depeters and dylan furgeson, all the rest can suck my dick and GTFO. it's the worst fucking thing to happen to skiing straight up. They dont even fucking go skiing. id like to see them shred pow on there 150 1960's volkl's .. We should start digging a whole next to the grave stone of acro because thats where this shit is headed.

- you don't need to be on a team to do it, go find a hill and build a single, learn fulls. you are now doing aerials by yourself

- im pretty sure most aerialists can carve a turn alot better than you, because alot of them have mogul training and that requires alot of turn knowledge. im also pretty sure your sliding you do on your 167 afterbangs isnt carving either
- there's other good aerialists that are really good at skiing and are nice guys

As it stand right now, in an event like the X-games, the judging is pretty subjective. With sports like moguls and aerials, although the progression is not there, they do have pretty solid ways of scoring runs with degree of difficulty and time, execution and all.

For this to work in the olympics, they would have to alter the judging system so much so, that it would wreck the sport anyway.
