It’s been decided!

First off, we’d like to give a huge shout out to everybody who entered a design for the “Design the 6th Sense” contest! The response to this was phenomenal and the caliber and creativity of the entries blew our expectations out of the water.

Good thing we had your input because we would have never been able to choose just one winner. But you did, and we listened.

So, the winner, by popular vote, goes to….. Drum Roll Please……..

hiro.hero – “The After Life”

Here’s what hiro.hero has to say about his design, and his take on what the “6th Sense” is:

“Death is life's ultimate mystery- it is inherently impossible to understand. I designed this ski with this paradox in mind, and it shows the impossibility of the 6th sense of the afterlife. It combines elements of extreme order (fractals) with elements of entropy and disorder (dissolving skeletons)- although the skeletons seem to be looking upwards, back towards mortal life. They have the sixth sense of the knowledge of what comes next, after we die.”

Now, to the real meat…

i would have preferred you doing it on next years skis because if i remember correctly, some skis changed a bit. i also think it would be smartest that if this ski is only available to NS members, make it on the da'nollie because most kids here are park rats. i know there are still alot of backcountry junkies but i would same they are a minority. if it was next years da nollie i would buy them.

He did just copy and paste, because each ski is just the right side of the skeleton - the image is mirrored on the right ski. The skeletons' hands wrap over to the other ski. It's a completely ripped image, meaning the ski is essentially just a photoshop tutorial (copied without any variation or imagination I might add) and an image he pulled off Google.

I didn't even enter this competition so I don't have any investment myself, but I don't think it's fair that he beat out other people who actually tried to do something original. I don't have a problem with his concept, but it should have been his own work. Newschoolers needs to get out of the mindset that it's OK to just copy other people's work and throw it out there as your own, because it's absolutely not OK to do that.

In response to the skeleton, I did make use of Vesalius' drawing. Legally speaking, Vesalius' anatomy drawings (of which there are many) were made in 1538, making them around 322 years past copyright date. I do agree with you guys that in principle it's not great to pull things from different places and amalgamate them into a single design, and frankly, this design is not my personal favorite because of that. That said, art is a lot about intent, and not just about the finished product. Take for example Duchamp's "Fountain". He took a urinal, signed it, and it was labeled as contemporary art. Now, at face value that seems like a cop out, right? I mean, he took something that already existed, and made it into his own art. But the thing about the "Fountain" is that it was only Duchamp who thought of making art out of already existing things, and it was only he who had the intent to do so. So, to bring this back full circle, I get why some of you are pissed that I made use of existing materials and synthesized them into a consolidated whole. But before you start harping with "I could do that" or "that's bullshit it's just copy and paste any idiot could do that", consider that no one else did, because no one else thought of doing so. In other words, I had the intent of making a design with specific themes, and carried out my intent via the combinations of copyright-free, readily available materials.

This is not true. As I said in my previous response, the Vesalius drawing which I made use of is in the public domain. In other words, its copyright has expired. Likewise, the digital replica of the original image which I based the skeleton in the design on is also in the public domain.
