This is the Hike4Haiti project, were seeking 1 penny a mile or more donation to hike the PCT . All the money  is going directly to Architecture for humanity  ( Architectureforhumanity.org ) Check it out the blog, Hike4Haiti.blogspot.com or even better, find us on facebook!! 25 miles a day??? with like a 50,60+ pound pack?? i wouldnt call that fun, ive been on backpacking trips but we only did 10 miles a day for a little over a week

You forgot taxes with the farm thing. you would only get like 5-6 bucks per hour but still thats a considerable amount of money. If he walked the whole way he wouldn't have to pay taxes because its a charity walk and you will get much more than a cent a day if your doing something like that

I 100% agree, 25 miles a day with a 50-60lb + pack would not be fun, that's why my pack weight will be sub 28 Lb including food and max water, which i wont always need or have. Probably will average about 22 lb's.

Big ups to you dude.. I don't get where all this hate is coming from, people do fundraisers like this all the time, its just a bit different.

 New post on the Blog.   Went snow camping and it was tons of fun , outside in Tahoe mid February without a tent or overhead cover. A 6 pack of Lagunitas IPA and a good friend, It was Sick! Kinda using this as a " snow Familiarization" exercise for the PCT haha. Good stuff

I didn't read all the posts, so ignore this if it's been brought up before.
But you joined in 2003, why were you called "Help4Haiti" when you joined? You've had no name changes, as far as it showed. Seems kind of weird.

exactly what I was  thinking... not saying your idea is a bad one, but you should hike for you, not someone else. Thats not what its about really, and he is right, you arent special. I also thru hiked the at in 07 and it was the best thing I have ever done with my life, I loved it and it was relatively cheap way to spend 5 1/2 months. Was it a charity thing for me? No, you will be hard pressed to find sponsors because so many hundreds, possibly even thousands of people do the same thing every year. To iflip, I hiked with around 2500 dollars and it was VERY tight for me, If I did it again i would do it with 3000-4000 to make it more comfortable and be able to buy a few beers along the way. What was your trail name?

To OP: if this is your first long distance hike I would STRONGLY suggest the AT (In which case you better get your ass in gear, most thruhikers are starting soon, or already have. I started on feb 24th). Even if you have experience backpacking, which I hope you do, a long distance hike is a totally different ball game. because of the fact that there are mroe people who hike the AT every year than the PCT  or CDT, you will meet so many cool people and have much better camaraderie. It will still get lonely at times, but thats part of the mental game, you need to get past that.  Not only  that but the AT is practically a highway, you will find it much easier to navigate than the PCT, which just goes from peak to peak at points and you must fill in the route in between. It would definitely be a much more solitary experience.

Good luck with your hike though, but dont do it for charity, it wont work and you will be left disappointed. There is only one reason people hike, and that is for selfish reasons, not charity. Its the way it is

for weekend warriors thats the average load because you guys cant go without your ipods and frying pans and canned food and full sized toothbrushes other heavy crap. I would imagine he will be somewhre between 30-40 lbs, thats what I was at, even with a pack full of food (the heaviest thing) Once you are on trail for a little while and get  used to it 20+ mile days are a breeze. 10 miles is a half days hike. You wouldnt call it fun because you dont know what its about. If hard ork turns you off then of course you wouldnt find it fun. Its not like hes going on a cruise, he's going to work his ass off, but thats the point, and at the end he will be rewarded for it in a way you could not understand until you've been there.

OP, you will probably have a hard time maintaining 3- 3.5 mph, probably more like 2-2.5 but either way you can do 25 mile days no problem. 2.5 mph = 10hrs of hiking, with breaks probably a little over 11. Leave camp at 7, get to new camp sometime between 5 and 6.  perfect.

I had one day that I did over 35 miles.... started out at 330 am..... man I slept good that night.

I got ya, but your kinda not getting it. I'm doing the hike part for me. But the bonus of getting sponsors attention towards what architecture for humanity is doing , it is not benefiting me. I don't think i'm special at all, about 300 people a year attempt a pct thru hike . I'm not the first , last ,youngest or oldest. But since im gonna do it, why not try to do something good with it? And actually money is allready steadily coming in , we will have a $$ count at the end of this month. The PCT is in my Backyard, maybe ill hike th AT next year. And if i cant get gear sponsors, ill buy my own stuff. no big deal.  Tons of nay sayers on NS haha, but i know that was gonna happen. Just wait, ill prove you all wrong. And those who are being supportive, thank you very much and stay tuned for some inside looks at the prep and hike!

OH, and the PCT is an established trail, yeah there aren't always signs to help but there is no bushwhacking except for a section in which the bushes overhang the trail.  Ive got a  pretty solid foundation of BC experience and this is my first hike over 140 miles.  Thanks for the "info" and comments.

Pacific Crest is for the feint of heart, hike the Great Western Trail, its some intense terrain. You get to hike through the colorado river, wasatch plateau, wasatch front, the tetons, yellowstone, and then god knows what once you break into Montana. Not to mention you have to make through bum fuck arizona. It's not one trail, you kind of have to make it what you want it, but it covers some classic "western" landscape.

The CDT is huge,not entirely marked or completed. That's next summers trek ha ha. There is a guy who completed all three , the PCT, CDT and At all in one year. That's huge!

That would be fucking epic... especially the whole montana part where you basically have to blaze your own shit... I would probably take the continental divide route though... you go through some amazing stuff there.

UPDATE

  I'm getting excited, we have raised a bit of money and we have yet to even begin making video, thanks to any of you who have donated to the project.  http://Hike4Haiti.Blogspot.com    Ive got 58 days  8 hours and 13 minutes until i leave . Check out the Itinerary ...Below.
   Pack weight is damn near worked out and i will be maxing out at 26 LBS and its only for a few days ( everyday my pack gets lighter because i eat the weight, up to 1.2 LB a day) Average weight will be near 22 lb's AKA i will be flying ! Dates are only worked out to whitney so i can calculate my permit but other than that i plan on hiking 22 to 30 miles a day ( 30's after i get past the sierras).
    Soon to buy a GO PRO HD and with the help of US mail and a Solio charger I will be sending video back to my buddy Bret and you can all follow along as i take care of business.

It's more about raising awareness than raising money. I.e. you read this, and you go, "why Haiti? What's going on there?" And hopefully you find out about it, and decide that that's something worth supporting. There are a lot of causes out there that people aren't even aware of, a lot of serious illnesses that really need research funding that most people haven't even heard of. I'm in the process of registering a Canadian arm of a charity for the treatment of fascioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy. You may have never heard of it, but if a good friend of yours emailed you and told you he was running a triathlon in support of it, you might find out what it is and kick in a few bucks.

Movember does this super well, because all of a sudden there are dudes with moustaches everywhere, and it's a conversation starter. Sure, people have a vague idea that prostate cancer is a thing, but they otherwise would probably never think about it. 

Speaking of which, I need to start a thread for that.
