Help me pick a bicycle

Alright well I've decided I'm sick of always driving my car everywhere and I need to strengthen my knee so I want a bike. I'm thinking of a road bike but am open to other options. I've never really had a bike other than the one I learned on so I"m pretty clueless. I'm about 6feet and 150lbs so I guess I need help with sizing. I'm willing to spend a decent amount of money on a good bike. I don't think I'm cool enough for a fixie but I'd consider a single speed. So bike owners of NS help me out.

I commuted on a Kona Stinky Dee-Lux for a year and it made me a better rider and got me in better shape then a road bike ever could, look into mt bikes then just switch out the tires for commuting

personally if i didnt have a bike and was going to buy one, it would drive me insane to get a road one and not be able to take it in the woods and stuff. i mean, you can ride a mountain bike on roads and stuff but not vice versa. just my two cents

Honestly I'm down for whatever bike. I'm not too big on the idea of riding in a crowded city on the roads so maybe a trials bike would suit me better. I'm just not looking for a full on mountain bike or bmx bike.

Do you want to get into cycling a bit as well?  Or is this just a too and from class kind of thing?  You can get plenty of cheap bikes that will do the job well, but if you want to start putting in some mileage you might be interested in going up a notch.

Ya I theres a campus about 3 miles away from my house so that'd be my primary use. As for cycling, maybe. I'm definitely not a cycle jersey, spandex, and timbuk2 bag guy but I do like having the option of riding long distances on a bike without killing my body.

If your looking for a street type bike you can screw around on and get around in a decent manner go look at BLKMRKT or any dirt jumper for that matter. Great for riding around the streets, and if you get into dirt jumps or street you'll be prepared.

just cruise craigslist for an old vintage 12 speed road bike. like the ones people turn into fixies, but don't turn it into one cuz thats gay. i like peugots for roadbikes and columbias for cruisers.

I'm actually liking dirt jumper bike idea. Are there any specific brands to stay away from? Also are bikes you get what you pay for or can I get a decent bike for under $500?

There aren't any brands I would stay away from other than wal-mart ones such as haro and mongoose.

I have a P2 by specialized and I believe the P1 is around 600.

For you I would go with a hard-tail bike they would be good for riding to class and stuff but could also take it on the single track and rally around...specilized makes a relitivly cheap hardtail named the hardrock and you should be able to find one around 500...

Please don't get a bmx, dj bike, or fixie unless you have a real interest in one or you'll hate them for how uncomfortable they are and you'll sell or stop riding altogether. 

I'd be looking at a nice cyclocross bike if you're planning on commuting with a bit of trail riding tossed in.  The sick thing about cyclocross bikes are they're beefed up road bikes that can handle mild trail rides, road ride epics and if you get the right one, you can go touring on them too.  They're great for doing a little of everything.

If you are interested in a DJ bike though, I'd recommend picking up one used.  A few brands have been mentioned, brands like BLKMRKT, Transition, NS, Norco, Giant and Specialized are quality.

Make sure to get something with a fork like the Argyle, Dirt Jumper III, Pike or the new Fox DJ fork.  A lot of DJ bikes comes with shitty, stiction-prone forks.  If you can get hydraulic brakes you'll appreciate them.

One final thing, be aware a DJ bike is going to feel a lot different than a trail hardtail.  DJ bikes are meant to be very low, jumpy and have snappy handling, which can really suck on a rocky downhill when you need stability.  You'll really have to decide what you want to do with your bike before you buy it.

I disagree. Buy a NICE roadbike, and lose your self into pretentious cocksuckery.

Get a decent worn road bike, and you're golden. Or get a fixie-conversion to piss off bike people more than anything else. Or get a single-speed and try to convince yourself that you're not a hipster. Or get a real track bike and have everyone confuse you for a fucktarded shit-cyclist.

In all seriousness, if you are using the bike to commute, get a road bike or mountain bike....and you should go to a bike shop if there is one near you to see what size works for you, but most bikes you buy online, they usually adjustable (seats and handlebars)

i was in the same situation you are last year.  i bought a gary fisher ged which is a urban assault style bike.  i use it for everything though it was an 8 speed which i loved, but is now a single speed because i am notorious for fucking up derailleurs.
 
i have a specialized hardrock too.  also a single speed. the hardrock is probably your best choice.  its light and pretty cheap.  go with 29 inch wheels they are awesome.  since your 6 ft i would say 16 inch frame, but just do whatever is comfortable for you.  also make sure you get disc brakes unless you want to constantly adjust them.

Ya theres a billion bike shops out here in salt lake so it should be easy to find a good one. I have a buddy who works at a road bike shop and another who works at a bmx/trails shop so they both tell me to get one or the other so I came here to see my unbiased options haha

Here's my opinion. Buy a decent XC bike. Not super light and expensive, but good components that will last (think shimano XT/SRAM X-7/9). Buy a set of commuting tires for it. When you commute, use those tires, when your on the mountain, use the stock tires. Problem solved.
