Jailbreak software for iPhone question

So I am a T-Mobile user and just heard about how this jailbreak download will allow me to unlock iPhones for T-Mobile allowing me to continue to be on my 5 faves plan but using an iPhone instead. Is this true? And if so, how legit and reliable is it?
