the french guy did get screwed by the judges, but he only did a 720 and bilodeau did a 1080 so he deserved the win. Plus did you see when Alex patted him on the back to congratulate him and he didn't even acknowledge it. Sore loser.

Begg-Smith has been told by his coaches and country not to talk to Canadians or Canadian media to avoid controversy or some shit like that.

Ski halfpipe should stay in the X-Games only - putting it in the olympics would shift it from a free sport to a FIS governed one, which is what happened to moguls and aerials - no doubles allowed in moguls, no quads in aerials. The progression of the sports is in part limited by FIS regulations, and FIS judging in comps can only be described as shit. Skiing is gaining enough attention as it is, and we don't need FIS to make our competitions as stagnant as snowboarding competitions are. You may wonder why a lot of the big names never used to go to FIS comps. The reason is because they would boycott FIS comps to prevent them from regulating freeskiing. Just some food for thought.

its 50% about how they ski the moguls. if you noticed the last guy got a bit squirrely at one point, but came back. time is 25%, and tricks are 25%.

back= back flip

double full= two full roations, aka two 360's aka 720

thats not how aerials is judged/labelled

back double full = 1 backflip, 2 full twists= 720 degrees of horizontal rotation and 360 of vertical. you never combine the two

and it's not an off axis trick, thats what a cork is. d spins are no longer done because the new technical (released in 08/09) pretty much destroyed the trick. which makes sense, its just a shitty back full

I only saw the last two competitors and am confused:

Gold Medalist did a back double full: backflip with a 720. Then a small backflip cross.

French dude (Colas) did an off-axis backflip with a 720.  Then a HUGE backflip without a cross

What makes the Canucks 1st jump better than the other dudes?  Colas jump looked bigger, harder, and most importantly, better.

Does Amplitude matter at all?

I know there are some mogulists on this sight.  But why is how you ski the moguls so important?  IMHO the best mogul skier will get to the bottom the fastest.  And the most stylish mogul skier will do the best airs.  Why would they leave so much of the score up to such an objective metric?

yo, fuck the back double full. its a lame aerialist trick. when they started allowing inverts in the bumps, I was stoked cuz I thought there was gonna be more newschool type tricks, like the french dude's cork seven. this is why i don't follow moguls anymore. also, crosses get the same score as if you were to grab (at least that's what i remember back from when I competed in moguls). props to the french dude for going huge and not copping out the easy way with a cross as opposed to an actual grab. dude went all out, and got straight up robbed. bullshit.

The French dude missed his grab and flailed on his last jump. A back double full can not be done by all mogul skiers so it's a much harder trick and alex did it perfectly with a clean landing.
How you ski the moguls is important because it's worth 50% of the judging.

its not that his trick wasnt harder its that he had a set trick that he was gonna perform and he essentially fucked it up.  he missed the grab he was supposed to do and he also rolled down the windows on his landing and i believe that those two add up to a major deduction which eventually led to his lower score.

as for the top jump alex did a back double full which is a backflip with a seventwenty, then colas did an off axis seven which is not a harder trick then the back double full.

colas did not deserve to win over alex however i do believe that he should have gotten a higher score. congrates to alex, i think that the best skier won last night

As for the whole x-games argument, I'm not sure I fully agree. It may change some halfpipe skiers approach to competition, but I think on the whole its not going to change skiing at all. People will still be 'free' unless they are olympic athletes trying to impress judgesl. Look at snowboarding, they have successfully gone into the olympics and its only helped their sport. I know skiing is becoming more and more mainstream, and being someone who's being around since the beginning, I have accepted that its never going back to the way it once was and that we should just grow it to be as big and awesome as it possibly can be.

Let's be fair though, when you expect to win, you are upset when you don't. Plus, I've seen tears in Bilodeau's eyes on the podium when he comes second.

Such a sick run for Bilodeau last night though. He deserved it.

it's like johnny said man, the judges knew he could stick the grab on that "egg roll" and he didn't so he lost puntos. Should have taken silver though, his run was the fastest and was pretty dope.

Bilodeau had tougher tricks but not by much. A back double full is worth about the same as a cork 10 and back full the same as cork 7. The back X is worth the same as a 3X and the loop is worth a little more if he got the grab. Bilodeau's tricks were executed much better than Colas so I can understand him winning that part, but not by a full point(4.51 vs 5.44).
My issue is that Colas had the faster time with no breaks in his form but Bilodeau was given better turn scores even with his sketchy middle section. Colas has some of the best turns in freestyle along with Dale.

So, Colas should have been above where he was because he got completely screwed on all scores
Dale probably could have been above Bilodeau because of much better turns
But Bidodeau does deserve his gold because freestyle is all a matter of opinion and his run was dirty

Don't get me wrong, I'm stoked on skiing getting big, I just don't want it to be the next racing or anything where everyone is all intense and competitive all the time(not to say racers are, but it's a completely competition based sport). If it gets in the olympics but somehow maintains the same ideals and attitudes as before, I'm mad stoked. Either way, I know what I'll be doing.

As for snowboarding, I don't know about that.... Every person and their dog has a snowboard, and its very rare that you see someone who knows how to use it properly, much less use it properly in the park.
